Jayne kindly wrote up these crib sheets to help me study for the Life in the UK test that will be my first step on the road to UK Citizenship.

Life In The UK Test – Preparing to Pass

Preparing to gain British citizenship can be a lengthy process. There are several ways of going about it. Those who are applying for UK naturalization is the most common way to gain British citizenship.  It applies to those who were not born in the UK or have any ancestral background.  The first step is to make sure you meet the residency requirements.  Secondly, you must pass a ‘Life in the UK test‘.  Then you need to apply for citizenship.

People who are applying for  British citizenship or obtaining an indefinite leave to remain (ILR), with an ESOL 3 level should take the Life in the UK test. If your English is less than ESOL 3 then you can take combined English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and citizenship classes instead of taking the test.

Preparation

If you are not up to speed on the culture of the UK, then it is advisable to read “Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship”, 2nd Edition. There are a lot of facts and figures which you will need to learn in order to pass the exam.  There are many who have lived in the UK all their lives would find this test extremely challenging.  It is estimated that 1 in 3 people fail the test, about 30%.  A re-test costs around £34, so failing can be very expensive. It is advised that you join a practice test site to make sure you are fully prepared.

The Test

The questions can be anything from UK society, culture, law, history, government, democracy, employment issues and Europe. The computer based test lasts for 45 minutes and consists of 24  multiple choice questions, which are based on chapters 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of ‘Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship’ book. The pass rate is 75%.  The main language for the test is English.  However, audio is allowed.  If you fail, you will have the opportunity to apply for another test, but you will have to pay the fee.

Who is Exempt?

  • If you are under 18 years old or over 65 years of age you will be exempt.

  • Those suffering from physical or mental health conditions that would affect the ability to take the test. Visual or hearing impairments are not exempt, but make sure you mention any impairments or health conditions when booking the test.

Make sure you take identification such as a passport; full or provisional UK photocard driving license; immigration status document endorsed with a UK Residence Permit, bearing a photograph of the holder; any of these Home office documents: Certificate of Identity Document, Stateless Person Document, or Convention Travel Document.  Make a note of any reference numbers if you have taken test before.

Step-by-step guide to Life in the UK Test Preparation

  • Visit the UK border agency webpage for details on the exam and additional requirements (lifeintheuk.gov.uk).  Make sure you meet the criteria for British citizenship
  • Book your test as it can take about two weeks. Take the test before you apply for naturalisation.
  • Read the official book – Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship (2007), 2nd Edition.
  • Undertake unlimited online practice test questions in exam conditions at www.citizenshiptests.co.uk
  • Review your test feedback and analysis as a guide for further revision and practice.
  • If you are getting at least 75% of answers (18 out of 24) correct most of the time, then you are ready for the official test, otherwise re-arrange your test date and undertake further study.
  •  Apply for settlement or submit citizenship application

Before you can take the Life in the UK Test, you will need to do some things first.

First, you have to have a basic command of the English language. This is VERY important, as the test will be based on the English language, and you might have a hard time answering the questions if you can’t understand it. If you don’t have knowledge of the English language, or felt a need to improve your vocabulary, do hire an English teacher or alternatively, you can attend English classes on universities.

Next is to have basic computer knowledge, since the Life in the UK Test is a computer-based test. You just need to have knowledge of basic typing, and on how to use the mouse. Ask your local test center to provide assistance should you have no knowledge of the computer and they will gladly assist you.
Now that you have mastered a bit of the English language and some computer skills, the next thing to do is to book the exam.

Contact the Life in the UK Test offices to know the nearest test centers in your area. Once you find the nearest test center, prepare £34.00 and some documents to prove your identity. Book for an exam date that you think is the most convenient to you. It is recommended, however, that you book at least a week, or even a month, to provide you with some time to study and review.
A test center representative will then ask you for some contact details. This is to verify that you have booked for the test, and will be checked again once you take the test.

After you have registered for the test, the next thing to do is to study. Get the official handbook, “The Life in the UK: A Journey to Citizenship”. Be sure that it is the latest revision. Read and understand the books contents, as the Life in the UK Test will draw out questions from that handbook. Make it a habit to take down notes should you find some vital information.

This material is relevant for those that are applying to obtain Indefinite Leave or British Citizenship in the UK. This book is ideal for those that are on a budget. You can read this book and practise online with the many free online practise websites. The Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 of this book is the same as the chapters 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the official Life in the UK A journey to citizenship. This book simply covers the Chapters 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 required to be studied for the Life in the UK test. For what the test is all about and for more in-depth information visit: www.lifeintheuktest.gov.uk There is also a section that list what areas you must understand in order to pass the life in the UK test. This helps you to understand what is expected of you in order to practice the test.
Video Rating: 5 / 5

If you feel that the official handbook isn’t complete, or you need some verification on some areas, you can opt to buy additional study materials on the bookstores. If you have no money to spend, you can search some websites, namely the official Life in the UK Test website, that provide free information (about the test) on the Internet. Be advised, however, that these websites, save the official one, are not endorsed by the Home Office or by the Life in the UK Test committee.

On the day of the test, bring your notes, a pen and the documents you have brought when you booked for the exam. Be sure to arrive an hour before, so you can still read your notes and do some final reviews. Once the proctor calls your name, present them the documents and tell them your name, as they need to verify that you have indeed registered for the exam.

Good luck on your test!

The Secret to passing any exam is the study material you use. Especially for the Life in the UK test
there are so many resources out there, which makes selecting a single resource for this exam even more confusing.
The easiest way to pass this exam is as simple as 1 and 2:
1. Read the Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship (2007), all questions in the exam will be from this book!
2. Try all questions in Life in the UK test Questions.

Immigration Solicitors in Kent

Immigration Solicitors Kent offer immigration advice being given by trained and fully qualified immigration solicitors who will assist clients with their immigration problems. Many people, who choose a solicitor to represent them with their cases, will usually opt for more experienced solicitors.

Immigration solicitors Kent can specialize in a specific area of immigration law, such as human rights and asylum law, or they cover all aspects of immigration law. Examples of the areas covered are asylum applications, marriage applications, family reunion applications, student visas, indefinite leave to remain, family visitor applications, human rights applications, right of abode, EU nationals and their families, ancestry applications and the tier 1-4 applications. The types of visas are usually tailored to the client’s specific circumstances.

At times clients deal with complex issues with their immigration status which requires the immigration solicitor to make an appeal on compassionate grounds, especially where the client’s human rights are infringed. For example, asylum seekers would fear returning to their home country, due to the fear of being ill treated and tortured. In these cases the immigration solicitors Kent can assist the client with the appeal process, sending out letters to the home office, and representing the client.

With the fast advancement of technology, Immigration solicitors Kent can take enquiries made over the internet. Immigration websites now offer a page where clients fill in an enquiry form with a short description of their problem and within the hour they will get a response for a solicitor from a law firm. The client can then decide if they want to proceed with the matter. Once the fees and details of the enquiry have been discussed and agreed the solicitor will assist the client with the enquiry.

All solicitors including Immigration solicitors Kent are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) The SRA is the regulatory body of the law society in England and Wales and they regulate solicitors and solicitor practices. The SRA sets out the Solicitors Code of Conduct for practicing solicitors. Examples include acting in the client’s best interest, acting with integrity, upholding the rule of law and the proper administration of justice, providing a good service to clients, etc. The SRA also deal with complaints and regulatory matters concerning the conduct and behavior of solicitors.

Immigration Solicitors need to be accredited by the Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme who are performing publicly funded work in the Immigration Category. The Scheme was developed to assess that the candidate possesses both the knowledge of immigration and asylum law and procedure and the practical skills required to provide good quality legal services in this category of law. There are different levels and this specifies the type of legal aid work which the solicitor can carryout.

History

This section needs additional citations for verification.

Please help improve this article by adding reliable references. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (March 2009)

In 1999, Philip Rosedale (known as Philip Linden inworld) formed Linden Lab. His initial focus was on the development of hardware that would enable computer users to be fully immersed in a virtual world experience. In its earliest form, the company struggled to produce a commercial version of the hardware, known as “The Rig”, which was realized in prototype form as a clunky steel contraption with several computer monitors that users could wear on their shoulders. That vision soon morphed into the software application Linden World, in which users could participate in task-based games and socialization in a three-dimensional online environment. That effort would eventually transform into the better known, user-centered Second Life. Although he was familiar with the metaverse of Neal Stephenson’s novel Snow Crash, Rosedale has said that his vision of virtual worlds predates that book, and that he conducted some early virtual world experiments during his college years at the University of California San Diego, where he studied physics.

On December 11, 2007, Cory Ondrejka, who helped program Second Life, was forced to resign as chief technology officer .

In January 2008, residents (including bots used to simulate traffic for better search rankings) spent a total of 28,274,505 hours “inworld”, and, on average, 38,000 residents were logged in at any particular moment. The maximum concurrency (number of avatars inworld) recorded is 88,200 in the 1st qtr. 2009

On March 14, 2008, Rosedale announced plans to step down from his position as Linden Lab CEO and to become chairman of Linden Lab’s board of directors. Rosedale announced Mark Kingdon as the new CEO effective May 15, 2008.

In 2008, Second Life was honored at the 59th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards for advancing the development of online sites with user-generated content. Rosedale accepted the award.

In January 2010, 18 million accounts were registered, although there are no reliable figures for actual long term consistent usage.

Classification

During a 2001 meeting with investors, Rosedale noticed that the participants were particularly responsive to the collaborative, creative potential of Second Life. As a result the initial objective-driven, gaming focus of Second Life was shifted to a more user-created, community-driven experience.

Second Life’s status as a virtual world, a computer game, or a talker, is frequently debated. Unlike a traditional computer game, Second Life does not have a designated objective, nor traditional game play mechanics or rules. As it does not have any stipulated goals it is irrelevant to talk about winning or losing in relation to Second Life. Likewise, unlike a traditional talker, Second Life contains an extensive world that can be explored and interacted with, and it can be used purely as a creative tool set if the user so chooses.

It also used to be for any age, but now requires users to be at least 18 years of age.

Residents and avatars

Main article: Resident (Second Life)

There is no charge to create a Second Life account or for making use of the world for any period of time. Linden Lab reserves the right to charge for the creation of large numbers of multiple accounts for a single person but at present does not do so. A Premium membership (US.95/mo., US.50 quarterly, or US/yr.) extends access to an increased level of technical support, and also pays an automatic stipend of L0/week into the member’s avatar account (down from an original stipend of L0, which is still paid to older accounts). This stipend, paid into the member’s avatar account, means that the actual cost for the benefit of extended tech support for an annual payment of US is only US. However, the vast majority of casual users of SL do not upgrade beyond the free “basic” account.

Avatars may take any form users choose (human, animal, vegetable, mineral, or a combination thereof) or residents may choose to resemble themselves as they are in real life, or they may choose even more abstract forms, given that almost every aspect of an avatar is fully customizable. See Second Life Culture for more details. A single resident account may have only one avatar at a time, although the appearance of this avatar can change between as many different forms as the Resident wishes. Avatar forms, like almost everything else in SL, can be either created by the user, or bought pre-made. A single person may also have multiple accounts, and thus appear to be multiple Residents (a person’s multiple accounts are referred to as alts).

Avatars can communicate via local chat or global instant messaging (known as IM). Chatting is used for localized public conversations between two or more avatars, and is visible to any avatar within a given distance. IMs are used for private conversations, either between two avatars, or among the members of a group, or even between objects and avatars. Unlike chatting, IM communication does not depend on the participants being within a certain distance of each other. As of version 1.18.1.2, voice chat, both local and IM, is also available on both the main grid and teen grid. Instant messages may optionally be sent to a Resident’s email when the Resident is logged off, although message length is limited to 4096 bytes. If a message is sent to an offline Resident it will also be saved to be viewed when they log on.

Economy

Main article: Economy of Second Life

Second Life has an internal currency, the Linden dollar (L$ ). L$ can be used to buy, sell, rent or trade land or goods and services with other users. Virtual goods include buildings, vehicles, devices of all kinds, animations, clothing, skin, hair, jewelry, flora and fauna, and works of art. Services include “camping”, wage labor, business management, entertainment and custom content creation (which can be broken up into the following 6 categories: building, texturing, scripting, animating, art direction, and the position of producer/project funder). L$ can be purchased using US Dollars and other currencies on the LindeX exchange provided by Linden Lab, independent brokers or other resident users. Money obtained from currency sales is most commonly used to pay Second Life’s own subscription and tier fees; only a relatively small number of users earn large amounts of money from the world. According to figures published by Linden Lab, about 64,000 users made a profit in Second Life in February 2009, of whom 38524 made less than US, while 233 made more than US00. Profits are derived from selling virtual goods, renting land, and a broad range of services. In March 2009, it has become known that there exist a few Second Life entrepreneurs, whose profits exceed 1 million US$ per year.

Some companies generate US dollar earnings from services provided in Second Life.

Accessibility

Second Life has been criticized for its lack of accessibility as users unable to use a mouse or unable to see are excluded from accessing Second Life using the Second Life viewer. However, since the Second Life viewer was made open source a number of solutions towards making Second Life accessible have been developed (listed chronological order):

A modification of the Second Life viewer has been developed that allows users who are visually impaired to navigate their avatar using force feedback. Different object types are distinguished through different vibration frequencies.

TextSL is a text client developed by the University of Nevada that allows Screenreader users to access Second Life. TextSL allows users who are visually impaired to navigate, communicate with avatars and interact with objects using a command based interface inspired by the Zork adventure game.

IBM’s Human Ability and Accessibility Center developed a Web based interface for Second Life that can be accessed with a screen reader. This client provides basic navigation, communication, and perception functions using hotkeys.

The guide dog project developed by Virtual Helping Hands offers a virtual guide dog object that can be “worn” by a user’s avatar. The guidedog provides a number of functions such as navigation and querying the environment through a chat-like interface. Feedback is provided using synthetic speech.

A recent study shows that one of the biggest barriers towards making Second Life accessible to users who are visually impaired is its apparent lack of meta data, such as names and descriptions, for virtual world objects. This is a similar problem for the accessibility of the web where images may lack alternative tags. The study found that 32% of the objects in Second Life are called ‘object’ and it is estimated that up to 40% of the objects in Second Life lack an accurate name.

Localization

In 2007, Brazil became the first country to have its own independently-run portal to Second Life, operated by an intermediarylthough the actual Second Life grid accessed through the Brazilian portal is the same as that used by the rest of the worldwide customer base. The portal, called “Mainland Brazil”, is run by Kaizen Games, making Kaizen the first partner in Linden’s “Global Provider Program”. In October 2007, Linden Lab signed a second “Global Provider Program” with T-Entertainment Co., LTD., Seoul, South Korea and T-Entertainment’s portal called “SERA Korea” serves as a gateway to Second Life Grid. Previously, starting in late 2005, Linden Lab had opened and run their own welcome area portals and regions for German, Korean and Japanese language speakers.

Public chat within the world supports many different written languages and character sets, providing the ability for people to chat in their native language. Several resident-created translation devices provide machine translation of public chat (using various online translation services), allowing for communication between residents who speak different languages.

Land ownership

Main article: Real estate (Second Life)

Premium membership allows the Resident to own land, with the first 512m (of Main Land owned by a holder of a Premium account) free of the usual monthly Land Use Fee (referred to by residents as Tier, because it is charged in tiers). There is no upper limit on tier; at the highest level, the user pays US5 for their first 65536m. Any land must first be purchased from either Linden Lab or a private seller.

There are four types of land regions; Mainland, Private Region, Homestead and Openspace. A region comprises an area of 65536m (16.1943 acres) in area, being 256 meters on each side. Mainland regions form one continuous land mass, while Private regions are islands. Openspace regions may be either Mainland or Private, but have lower prim limits and traffic use levels than Mainland regions. The owners of a Private region enjoy access to some additional controls that are not available to mainland owners, for example they have a greater ability to alter the shape of the land. Residents must own a region (either Mainland or Private) to qualify for purchasing an Openspace region.

Linden Lab usually sells only complete 65536m (16.1943 acres) regions at auction (although smaller parcels are auctioned on occasion, typically land parcels abandoned by users who have left). Once a Resident buys land they may resell it freely and use it for any purpose that it is not prohibited by the Second Life Terms of Service.

Residents may also choose to purchase, or rent, land from another Resident (a Resident landlord) rather than from Linden Lab. On a Private region, the built in land selling controls allow the landlord to sell land in the region to another Resident while still retaining some control. Residents purchasing, or renting, land from any other party than Linden Lab are not required to hold a Premium membership nor to necessarily pay a Tier fee, although typically the landlord will require some form of upfront and/or monthly fee to compensate them for their liability to pay the Land Use Fee charged by Linden Lab. However Linden Lab acknowledges only the landlord as the owner of the land, and will not intervene in disputes between Residents. This means, for example, that a landlord can withdraw a Resident’s land from availability, without refunding their money, and Linden Lab will not arbitrate in the dispute.

Separate grids

In Second Life, there are two age-differentiated grids (one is for teens 13-17, one is for adults 18 or over). When a teen turns 18, he/she is transferred from the Teen Grid to the Main Grid. Linden Lab has received controversy for the lack of integration between teens and adults. Some parents protest that they cannot be on the grid together with their teenage children, and companies cannot market to both teens and adults in SL even if their products have universal appeal. Teen grid residents have spoken out in favor of merging the two grids with certain limitations to protect minors from adult content and predators on the main grid. This grid merge is widely supported by teen grid residents, although some also oppose it. It should be noted that the majority of those on the Teen Grid who oppose merger would want a separate “Teen Only” area, much like the recently-created “Adult” mainland in Second Life. Linden Lab employees (known as “Lindens”) have also been in favor of merging the grids, most notably Blue Linden, former teen grid manager.

The teen grid and the adult grid actually are technically parts of one grid called Agni. (Some of the Second Life grids are named after Hindu gods.) However, teen residents cannot access the adult regions, and adult residents cannot access the teen regions.

On 19 January 2009 Linden Lab, Philip Linden related (in an interview with Metanomics) an intent to merge the two grids into one. This immediately attracted uproar on SL’s private forums, largely from residents who feared they would be required to use the unpopular age verification system, and would be permanently under threat of a false sex-related allegation or lawsuit by a teenager or his/her parents.

The grids are made of regions each 256 meters square. Regions without servers appear as deep sea and cannot be entered and cannot be flown over, but regions with servers can be seen across regions without servers.

These regions’ coordinate numbers locating them within the grid can be from 0 to (220-1), giving in theory a total grid size of about 281.475 million kilometers square; but all or most regions with servers are in the extreme northwest corner of this vast theoretical area.

Underage users, who are under 18 in real life, are not allowed onto the main grid, and being an underage user there is an offense that can be abuse reported. However, Linden Lab places burden of proof on alleged underage users, and does not check to verify anything themselves. As a result, false underage user reports are filed by some residents as a form of griefing or for revenge.

Technology

Second Life comprises the viewer (also known as the client) executing on the user’s personal computer, and several thousand servers operated by Linden Lab.

Client

Linden Lab provides official viewers for Microsoft Windows 2000 / XP / Vista / 7, Mac OS X, and most distributions of Linux. A third-party version is available for Solaris and OpenSolaris. The viewer renders 3D graphics using the OpenGL technology. Since the viewer is open source, users may recompile it to create their own custom viewers; modified viewer software is available from third parties. One such example is the Nicholaz Edition. This viewer, produced by Nicholaz Beresford, includes bug fixes developed outside Linden Lab that are not yet included in the Linden Lab code. More recently a client known as Emerald, created by a group of residents who previously made their own clients yet have since banded together to work as one, has become popular among the user base of Second Life due to the large number of features they have added to the original client.

An independent project, libopenmetaverse, offers a function library for interacting with Second Life servers. libopenmetaverse has been used to create non-graphic third party viewers, including SLEEK, a text browser using.NET, and Ajaxlife, a text viewer that runs in a web browser and TextSL a text client inspired by the Zork adventure game that allows users who are visually impaired to access Second Life using a Screenreader.

In February 2008 a partnership between Linden Lab and Vollee was announced. In May, Vollee launched an open Beta trial for a Second Life mobile application that lets Residents travel and communicate in-world by logging in from a handset using an existing account. The service, introduced for free, requires downloading a thin client to a 3G or Wi-Fi enabled handset. As of June 2009, it seems Vollee no longer exists as their web sites are no longer available.

A special beta client is available, which has been updated and used for software testing by volunteers. The beta client connects to a “beta grid” which consists of a limited number of regions mirrored at regular intervals from the real grid. The mirroring process overwrites any changes made on the beta grid, and thus actions taken within it are not stored by the servers; it is for testing purposes only.

Server

Each full region (an area of 256×256 meters) in the Second Life “grid” runs on a single dedicated core of a multi-core server, Homestead regions share 3 regions per core and Openspace Regions share 4 regions per core, running proprietary software on Debian Linux. These servers run scripts in the region, as well as providing communication between avatars and objects present in the region.

Every item in the Second Life universe is referred to as an asset. This includes the shapes of the 3D objects known as primitives, the digital images referred to as textures that decorate primitives, digitized audio clips, avatar shape and appearance, avatar skin textures, LSL scripts, information written on notecards, and so on. Each asset is referenced with a universally unique identifier or UUID.

Assets are stored on Isilon Systems storage clusters, comprising all data that has ever been created by anyone who has been in the SL world. Infrequently used assets are offloaded to S3 bulk storage. As of December 2007[update], the total storage was estimated to consume 100 terabytes of server capacity. The asset servers function independently of the region simulators, though the region simulators request object data from the asset servers when a new object loads into the simulator.[citation needed]

Each server instance runs a physics simulation to manage the collisions and interactions of all objects in that region. Objects can be nonphysical and non moving, or actively physical and movable. Complex shapes may be linked together in groups of up to 255 separate primitives. Additionally, each player’s avatar is treated as a physical object so that it may interact with physical objects in the world. As of 1 April 2008 (2008 -04-01)[update], Second Life simulators use the Havok 4 physics engine for all in-world dynamics. This engine is capable of simulating thousands of physical objects at once.

Linden Lab pursues the use of open standards technologies, and uses free and open source software such as Apache, MySQL, Squid and Linux. The plan is to move everything to open standards by standardizing the Second Life protocol. Cory Ondrejka, former CTO of Second Life, has stated that a while after everything has been standardized, both the client and the server will be released as free and open source software.

OpenSimulator

Main article: OpenSimulator

In January 2007, OpenSimulator was founded as an open source simulator project. The aim of this project is to develop a full open source server software for Second Life clients. OpenSIM is BSD Licensed and it is written in C# and can run under Mono environment. In 2008 there were some alternative Second Life grids which are using OpenSimulator.

Applications

Education

Second Life is used as a platform for education by many institutions, such as colleges, universities, libraries and government entities. There are over one hundred regions used for educational purposes covering subjects such as chemistry and English. Instructors and researchers in Second Life favor it because it is more personal than traditional distance learning. Research has uncovered development, teaching and/or learning activities which use Second Life in over 80 percent of UK universities. At least 300 universities around the world teach courses or conduct research in SL. New educational institutions have also emerged that operate exclusively within Second Life, taking advantage of the platform to deliver content to a world wide audience at low cost.

Info Islands uses library programming sponsored by the Illinois’ Alliance Library System and OPAL currently offered online to librarians and library users within Second Life. Another virtual continent called SciLands is devoted to science and technology education. While initially centered on the International Spaceflight Museum, it now hosts a number of organizations including NASA, NOAA, NIH, JPL, NPR, National Physical Laboratory, UK, and a host of other government agencies, universities, and museums. In December 2008, the United States Air Force launched MyBase, a Second Life island overseen by the Air Education and Training Command.

Second Life’s usefulness as a platform for pre-K12 education is limited due to the age restrictions on the main grid and the difficulties of collaborating among various educational projects on the teen grid. New approaches to fostering collaboration on the teen grid, such as the Virtual World Campus, offer some hope of overcoming some of these obstacles. For now, however, the primary utility of Second Life for pre-K12 education is in the education and professional development of teachers and school librarians. Still, K12 educators use Second Life to meet each other and to create objects and structures that help them develop curriculum, as EnergyTeachers.org does with its Sustainability Energy Science Lab.

Needs to hold meetings of more people than can be supported by a region’s server, have prompted a behavior called “four-cornering”, i.e. meeting where four regions with servers all meet; this is unwelcome, as it tends to put excessive load on the system sending object and texturing information between those four regions’ servers.

Language education

Main article: Virtual World Language Learning

Language learning is the most widespread type of education in virtual worlds, with many universities, mainstream language institutes and private language schools using 3D virtual environments to support language learning.

Arts

Second Life residents express themselves creatively through virtual world adaptations of art exhibits, live music, live theater.

Art exhibits

Second Life has created an environment where artists can display their works to an audience across the world. This has created an entire artistic culture on its own where many residents who buy or build homes can shop for artwork to place there. Gallery openings even allow art patrons to “meet” and socialize with the artist responsible for the artwork and has even led to many real life sales. Numerous art gallery sims abound in second life. Most notable of these is the art gallery sim “Cetus”, which has been in continuous operation since 2006 as a planned, mix-use art community of galleries, offices and loft apartments for residents. Created by avatar Xander Ruttan, it has resulted in many collaborative efforts amongst artists, designers and builders from across the world.

The modeling tools from Second Life allow the artists also to create new forms of art, that in many ways are not possible in real life due to physical constraints or high associated costs. The virtual arts are visible in over 2050 “museums” (according to SL’s own search engine).

In 2008 Haydn Shaughnessy, real life gallerist, along with his wife Roos Demol hired a real life architect, New York based, Benn Dunkley to design a gallery in Second Life. Dunkleys goal was to design an interactive gallery with art in mind in a virtual world. “Ten Cubed” is a radical departure in art exhibition, a futuristically designed gallery showcasing art in a unique setting. On January 31, 2008, “Ten Cubed” was launched. For its inaugural exhibition, Crossing the Void II, owner and curator Shaughnessy selected five artists working in and with modern technologies. These artists included Chris Ashley based in Oakland, California, Jon Coffelt based in New York, New York, Claire Keating based in Cork, Ireland, Scott Kildall based in San Francisco, California and Nathaniel Stern originally based in New York, New York now in Dublin, Ireland. Real life as well as Second Life editions are available from the gallery.

The virtual creations from the metaverse are disclosed in real life by initiatives such as Fabjectory (statuettes) and Secondlife-Art.com (oil paintings).

In 2007, artists Adam Nash, Christopher Dodds and Justin Clemens won a AUD,000 Second Life Artists in Residence grant from the Australia Council for the Arts. Their Babelswarm installation was launched in Second Life and The Lismore Regional Gallery in NSW, Australia on April 11, 2008 by Australia Council Chairman James Strong. In 2008, the French Artist Fred Forest had entered the virtual world of Second Life to show his art project for the first time in his country. He inaugurated his “Experimental Center of the Territory of M2″ (“Centre exprimental du terrioire du M2″), where he invited politicians to discuss about sustainable development and digital identity card ( Capucine.net). In another art project, he discussed about art institutions in France in his action called “The Corrida of Art”.

Live music

Live music performances in Second Life takes place in three distinctly different ways;

With in-world voice chat, where the user dons a headset and microphone then enables a Second Life browse to “broadcast” his voice to other users, much like a telephone conference call.

With streaming, where vocal and instrumental music by Second Life residents can be provided with the aid of Internet broadcast software, such as Shoutcast. This is input, via microphones, instruments or other audio sources, into computer audio interfaces and streamed live to audio servers. Similar to webcast radio, the audio stream from the live performance can be received in Second Life for the enjoyment of other Residents on their computer speakers. This started with performances by Astrin Few in May 2004 and began to gain popularity mid 2005. For example the UK band Passenger performed on the Menorca Island in mid-2006. Another UK band, Redzone, toured in Second Life in February 2007.

With inworld samples, where sounds samples are uploaded and an inworld user interface instruments is made to trigger those. Unlike streaming, performing with inworld samples make use of the Second Life environment and creates a three-dimensional sound experience to the audience. The Avatar Orchestra Metaverse featuring among other composer Pauline Oliveros is the most prolific representative with this approach.

Linden Lab added an Event Category “Live Music” in March 2006 to accommodate the increasing number of scheduled events. By the beginning of 2008, scheduled live music performance events in Second Life spanned every musical genre, and included hundreds of live musicians and DJs who perform on a regular basis. A typical day in Second Life will feature dozens of live music performances.

In 2008 the UK act Redzone announced they would release their new live album only via Second Life.

Redzone also began choreographing and synchronising their performances via MIDI in October 2008.

Many amateur performers start their music careers in Second Life by performing at virtual karaoke bars or Open Mic, then progress to performing for “pay”, or Linden dollars, in-world.

Theater

Live theater is presented in Second Life. The SL Shakespeare Company performed an act from Hamlet live in February 2008. In 2009 the company is producing scenes from Twelfth Night.

In 2007 Johannes von Matuschka and Daniel Michelis developed Wunderland, an interactive SL theatre play at Schaubhne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin, Germany.

In 2007, HBO hosted a comedy festival in Second Life, using live streaming audio. In March 2009, SL residents staged a two-day Virtually Funny Comedy Festival to “help build awareness for Comic Relief, Red Nose Day 2009 and of course, comedy in Second Life.”

In December 2008, The Learning Experience, a not-for-profit virtual education campus in Second Life, staged its first live theater events with the production of two short plays, A Matter of Husbands by Ferenc Molnr and Porcelain and Pink by F. Scott Fitzgerald. In 2009, the TLE theater company began producing full-length plays in Second Life, starting with The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde in February, and followed by Candida by George Bernard Shaw in April.

Science

Second Life is used for scientific research, collaboration, and data visualization. Examples include SciLands, American Chemical Society’s ACS Island, Genome, Nature Publishing Group’s Elucian Islands Village.

Work solutions

Second Life gives companies the option to create virtual workplaces to allow employees to virtually meet, hold events, practice any kind of corporate communications, conduct training sessions in 3D immersive learning spaces, simulate business processes, and prototype new products.

Religion

Religious organizations have also begun to open virtual meeting places within Second Life. In early 2007, LifeChurch.tv, a Christian church headquartered in Edmond, Oklahoma, and with eleven campuses in the USA, created “Experience Island” and opened its twelfth campus in Second Life. The church reported “We find that this creates a less-threatening environment where people are much more willing to explore and discuss spiritual things”.[citation needed] In July 2007, an Anglican cathedral was established in Second Life; Mark Brown, the head of the group that built the cathedral, noted that there is “an interest in what I call depth, and a moving away from light, fluffy Christianity”.

Egyptian owned news website Islam Online has purchased land in Second Life to allow Muslims and non-Muslims alike to perform the ritual of Hajj in virtual reality form, obtaining experience before actually making the pilgrimage themselves in person.

Second Life also offers several groups that cater to the needs and interests of Humanists, atheists, agnostics, and freethinkers. One of the most active groups is SL Humanism which has been holding weekly discussion meetings inside Second Life every Sunday since 2006.

Embassies

The Maldives was the first country to open an embassy in Second Life. The Maldives’ embassy is located on Second Life’s “Diplomacy Island”, where visitors will be able to talk face-to-face with a computer-generated ambassador about visas, trade and other issues. “Diplomacy Island” also hosts Diplomatic Museum and Diplomatic Academy. The Island is established by DiploFoundation as part of the Virtual Diplomacy Project.

In May 2007 Sweden became the second country to open an embassy in Second Life. Run by the Swedish Institute, the embassy serves to promote Sweden’s image and culture, rather than providing any real or virtual services. The Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Carl Bildt, stated on his blog that he hoped he would get an invitation to the grand opening.

In September 2007, Publicis Group announced the project of creating a Serbia island as a part of a project Serbia Under Construction. The project is officially supported by Ministry of Diaspora of Serbian Government. It was stated that the island will feature Nikola Tesla Museum, Gua trumpet festival and Exit festival. It was also planned on opening a virtual info terminals of Ministry of Diaspora.

On Tuesday December 4, 2007, Estonia became the third country to open an embassy in Second Life. In September 2007, Colombia and Serbia opened embassies. As of 2008, Macedonia and the Philippines have opened embassies in the “Diplomatic Island” of Second Life. In 2008, Albania opened an Embassy in the Nova Bay location. SL Israel was inaugurated in January 2008 in an effort to showcase Israel to a global audience, though without any connection to official Israeli diplomatic channels.

Malta and the African country Djibouti are also planning to open virtual missions in Second Life.

Live sport entertainment

Popular forms of live entertainment have been making their appearance in Second Life. Many sports have appeared, allowing residents to watch or participate in many popular activities. Sporting leagues have sprung up in Second Life for cheerleading, American football, association football, boxing, pro wrestling, and auto racing. The Digital Championship Wrestling Federation (DCWF), founded February 2008, is a professional wrestling promotion in-world, providing live wrestling for residents regularly. It holds two main shows: Showdown on Saturdays at 12 noon SLT and Warzone on Wednesdays at 4pm SLT. It also hosts frequent exhibition matches and holds its monthly Main Events on the first Saturday of each month. The DCWF uses its own in-house wrestling system, provided free of charge to accepted applicants.[citation needed] RAGE Fighting Championships brings mixed martial arts to Second Life, allowing residents to have a virtual career as a professional prize fighter. Free training and equipment is available to get users started. Users can choose fighting disciplines including boxing, muay thai, kung fu, capoeira, kick boxing, and many others. RAGE Fighting Championships offers an extensive amateur circuit and events held several times each week. RAGE has recently added wrestling to its lineup of sports that take place as well in association with the Xtreme Wrestling Action organisation. RAGE Fighting Championships can be seen on Rezzed.TV.[citation needed]

Gaming

Perhaps the most widespread gaming application of Second Life is user-created multiplayer role-playing games. Each of these mini-MMORPGs is referred to as a “roleplay sim” even though some span 25 simulator environments or more, existing over several physical servers. Their storylines, players and factions, and weaponry or spells are very complex, involving hundreds of players and thousands of props. The virtual world component adds a new dimension to MMORPGs. Political strategy, secrecy, and manipulation, for instance, are as important as skill at combat in many of these sims.

Roleplay sims follow a theme such as Post-Apocalyptic, Goreans, Vampires, Steampunk, Pirates, Star Trek, Feudal Japan, Battlefield Combat, Wild West, and Ancient Rome. Most, but not all, are English-speaking sims. Mexico Monteray, for instance, is a Spanish roleplay sim. Favela Cidade de Deus is a popular Brazilian combat sim that recreates the violent slums of Rio de Janeiro.

Roleplay sims use one of several advanced roleplaying combat systems, most of which are based on Dungeons & Dragons game mechanics. These are web-enabled, using an API, to communicate data on each character. Character creation includes character classes, races, attributes, and proficiencies/spells/abilities. A system of hit points, which are reduced by damage incurred, is implemented through one of the many combat HUDs. It allows for PvP Melee Combat and Combat with NPC Monsters. It can be used to build full quests.

First-person shooter combat is also a popular gaming choice in Second Life, with many in-world military groups battling each other, vying for prestige. Combat is performed by most of these organizations through the built-in Linden Labs Damage system (LL damage) and not the above mentioned third-party roleplay HUDs & systems. The Second Life military community hosts many organizations dedicated to combat, research & development, and community. Initially, the community began as a small group of individuals seeking to emulate first-person shooter game mechanics within Second Life. It has since steadily grown to span across many simulators with many participants. There also exists non-English speaking groups like Commando Anti Terrorismo Internacional (sim: CATI Combat Zone), Tercio de Madrid (sim: Great Land), and Mercenary Brothers Commando (sim: MBC). All of these organizations have a simulator (or multiple simulators) dedicated as their home base with objectives to secure by other organizations in order to achieve victory.

Racing vehicles, be it motorcycles, cars, hovercraft, airplanes, or other, more fantastical craft is also a popular activity, with some courses spanning multiple simulators. Sailing using sophisticated simulations of real-world physics is very popular, especially since the creation in January, 2009, of the Blake Sea, over 46 interconnected sims of open water area. While the Blake Sea was created primarily as an area for sailing, it is also popular as an area for simulated flight in a wide range of aircraft. Board games, including chess, Go, and Mahjongg, also have many in-world incarnations.

Skill games such as Dragonz, Gempuz, Gem Sorter, Letterz, Pipz, Quince, Solo Dices, Sudoku, Syzygy and XMemory have come under attack due to a prohibition on gambling in Second Life enacted in July 2007 by Linden Lab. There are still many games that mimic the appearance of traditional “casino” games, but their payouts are ultimately based on skill.

The ability in Second Life for anyone to create objects, textures, and scripts has allowed just about every style of game to be implemented in-world, at least to some extent, by people who are passionate about it.

Criticism and controversy

Main article: Criticism of Second Life

Regulation

In the past, large portions of the Second Life economy comprised businesses that are now regulated or banned. Changes to Second Life’s Terms of Service in this regard have largely had the purpose of bringing activity within Second Life into compliance with various international laws, even though the person running the business may be in full compliance with the law in his own country. Typically, Linden Lab offer no compensation for businesses that are damaged or destroyed by these rule changes, which can render significant expenditure or effort worthless.

On July 26, 2007, Linden Lab announced a ban on in-world gambling, in fear that new regulations on Internet gambling could affect Linden Lab if it was permitted to continue. The ban was immediately met with in-world protests.

In August 2007, a 0,000 in-world bank called Ginko Financial collapsed due to a bank run triggered by Linden Lab’s ban on gambling, which halved the size of the Second Life economy. The aftershocks of this collapse caused severe liquidity problems for other virtual “banks”, which critics had long asserted were scams. On Tuesday, January 8, 2008 Linden Lab announced the upcoming prohibition of payment of fixed interest on cash deposits in unregulated banking activities in-world. All banks without real-world charters closed or converted to virtual joint stock companies on January 22, 2008. After the ban, a few companies continue to offer non-interest bearing deposit accounts to residents, such as the e-commerce site XStreet, which had already adopted a zero-interest policy 3 months before the LL interest ban.

Technical issues

Due to Second Life’s rapid growth rate, it has suffered from difficulties related to system instability. These include increased system latency, and intermittent client crashes. However, some faults are caused by the system’s use of an “asset server” cluster, on which the actual data governing objects is stored separately from the areas of the world and the avatars that use those objects. The communication between the main servers and the asset cluster appears to constitute a bottleneck which frequently causes problems. Typically, when asset server downtime is announced, users are advised not to build, manipulate objects, or engage in business, leaving them with little to do but chat and generally reducing confidence in all businesses on the grid.

A more disturbing fault, believed to be caused by the same issue, is “inventory loss” in which items in a user’s inventory, including those which have been paid for, can disappear without warning or permanently enter a state where they will fail to appear in world when requested (giving an “object missing from database” error). Linden Lab offers no compensation for items that are lost in this way, although a policy change instituted in 2008 allows accounts to file support tickets when inventory loss occurs. Many in-world businesses will attempt to compensate for this or restore items, although they are under no obligation to do so and not all are able to do so. A recent change in how the company handles items which have “lost their parent directory” means that inventory loss is much less of a problem and resolves faster than in recent years. “Loss to recovery times” have gone from months (or never) to hours or a day or two for the majority of users, but inventory loss does still exist.

Second Life functions by streaming all data to the user live over the Internet with minimal local caching of frequently used data. The user is expected to have a minimum of 300 kilobits of Internet bandwidth for basic functionality, with 1000 kilobit providing better performance. Due to the proprietary communications protocols, it is not possible to use a network proxy/caching service to reduce network load when many people are all using the same location, such as when used for group activities in a school or business.

Fraud and intellectual property protection

Although Second Life’s client and server incorporate Digital Rights Management technology, the visual data of an object must ultimately be sent to the client in order for it to be drawn; thus unofficial third-party clients can bypass them. One such program, CopyBot, was developed in 2006 as a debugging tool to enable objects to be backed up, but was immediately hijacked for use in copying objects; additionally, programs that generally attack client-side processing of data, such as GLIntercept, can copy certain pieces of data. Such use is prohibited under the Second Life TOS and could be prosecuted under the DMCA.

Linden Labs may ban a user who is observed using CopyBot or a similar client, but it will not ban a user simply for uploading or even selling copied content; in this case, Linden Lab’s enforcement of intellectual property law is limited to that required by the “safe harbor” provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which requires filing a real-life lawsuit. Although a few high-profile businesses in Second Life have filed such lawsuits, the majority of businesses in Second Life do not make enough money for a lawsuit to be worthwhile, or due to real-life work commitments cannot devote enough time to complete one; thus, they are effectively unprotected.

There have also been issues with the use of false DMCA takedown notices. Once a DMCA takedown notice is served, reversing it requires an individual to expose his personal information to the filer (filing a notice does not require this); for the penalty of perjury to be enacted, a lawsuit is required (anything less, the false DMCA claimer can just claim it from a different account every week causing legitimate business unlimited losses). In addition, the technical process of removal and re-instatement of content on Second Life is subject to failure which can result in content becoming unusable to its owner. This does not effectively prevent content theft; a thief who is subject to a DMCA takedown notice will not challenge it, but will simply create a new account and re-upload the content, often releasing it with all permissions available to maximize propagation out of spite.

Most users in the world as paying, private individuals are, likewise, effectively unprotected. Common forms of fraud taking place in-world include bogus investment and pyramid schemes, fake or hacked vendors, and failure to honor land rental agreements. Some residents have claimed that there is also a high incidence of sales of content to users unaware of its value (for example, weapons which would require the buyer to own a private island, as firing them in any other area would violate the terms of service; or avatars which appear to represent advanced roles but which, in reality, are nothing more than party costumes due to the inability to support those roles in a world with free social behaviour[clarification needed]).

References in popular culture

Main article: Second Life in popular culture

Since its debut in 2003, Second Life has become increasingly referred by various popular culture mediums, including literary, television, film and music. In addition, various significantly-popular personalities in such mediums have themselves used or employed Second Life for both their own works and for private purposes.

Competitors

Second Life has several competitors, including Entropia Universe, IMVU, There, Active Worlds, Kaneva, and the Red Light Center.[citation needed]

Age UK Calls on London Marathon Runners to Show their Support for Older People

(PRWeb UK) March 29, 2011

Age UK, the new force combining Age Concern and Help the Aged, is urging runners who have secured a place in the Virgin London Marathon ballot to run for the Charity on Sunday 17th April and help support people in later life.

All runners who choose to go the extra mile and join the Age UK team will receive advice and support throughout their training, and can look forward to a post-race reception with refreshments, a goody bag and a massage to soothe aching muscles.

The Age UK running team includes 74-year-old Tom Harrison, who coaches other runners in his spare time and is in training to complete the 26.2 mile run in under four and a half hours.

Tom said: “Running produces endorphins which make you feel so happy and invigorated, and I do love the atmosphere of the London Marathon. Over the years I’ve raised over £10,000 for Age UK – I just feel that we should do whatever we can to encourage older people to stay active. I’d urge anyone who has a place in this year’s event to run for the Charity.”

Helen Parsons, Challenge and Running Events Fundraiser at Age UK, said: “We have a fantastic team of runners who are passionate about making a difference to the lives of older people, including HelpAge International’s Chief Executive Officer Richard Blewitt and Age UK’s Chief Executive, Tom Wright! Places are still available for participants who have a place in the London Marathon, and we’d love to welcome some new runners on board.

“Whether you’re a seasoned sprinter or it’s your first time running a marathon, you’ll be raising money to help Age UK provide a range of products and services to improve later life, including information and advice to enable older people access the benefits and services they need, practical support to help people in later life continue to live independently and social activities helping older people have fun, keep well and make friends.”

For further information on how to run for Age UK, please contact the Age UK Fundraising Events Team at events(at)ageuk(dot)org(dot)uk, visit http://www.ageuk.org.uk/events, or call 0207 239 1922 for more details.

~day 176: all things bright and beautiful~
british citizenship form

Step into Colomb Art Gallery, at 52A George St, in Marylebone, London, and you’ll find that all things truly are bright and beautiful. There we met our friend Stephen B. Whatley, a devout Catholic and expressionist painter whose work is on show in the gallery’s spring collection. His paintings bounce off the walls and into your eyes with colourful brilliance, filling up the front window and oozing off the plain white walls with radiant life.

As an expressionist, Stephen paints instinctively from the subconscious, giving real subjects a poignant abstraction that allows the viewer to ‘enter in’ to the heart of the work in a deep and personal way. My favourites among his works, of course, are his paintings of Jesus, Mary and the saints, Christian works of art that have the ability to penetrate the soul even of the unbeliever, and for the believer, are a moving witness to God’s ineffable love and living presence.

But Stephen also has the ability to paint architecture like no one else—making dead buildings come alive and giving still-life’s movement and vitality. The secret to Stephen’s work lies in the fact that his greatest talent is not the ability to paint, but the capacity to see—to see God everywhere and in everything. He brings a Franciscan quality to his view of the world, a view in which even the most ordinary features of our surroundings are kindled with colour and brilliance; the world he paints is permeated by, and alive to God. Like St. Francis, Stephen is an optimist at heart who truly believes God is at work in everything and in everyone. However, this optimism certainly hasn’t arisen from an absence of suffering in Stephen’s life, but rather from the endurance of personal tragedy, from the ‘living out’ of suffering for love, with love, and through love. For Stephen, everything life offers—even suffering—is intensely valuable and beautiful, when seen in the light of God’s love.

I would like to talk about just two of the paintings on show at the Colomb. The first is his ‘Tribute to Royal Love,’ a grand portrait of Prince William and Catherine Middleton painted just ahead of their upcoming nuptials. Although I did, in fact, swear allegiance to the Queen when I became a British citizen, as an American (with dual citizenship!), I’m still often mystified by the natural affection of the British for the institution of the monarchy and especially for the current Royal family.

So, it was an even bigger accomplishment on Stephen’s part to touch me with this portrait of ‘Wills and Kate.’ What Stephen draws out is the human story of loss, hope, and love that shines out in William’s life. This is most evident in the inclusion of the sparkling blue engagement ring, originally Princess Diana’s, that Kate wears. Like the prince, Stephen also lost his beloved mother in his adolescence, and for the artist, this is the point of entry into William’s heart and the story of his love for Kate Middleton. Most of us will be all too able to identify with the grief of loss, and the sense of hopelessness and desolation experienced long after. Stephen’s message is that where there is love, there is hope; he shades Kate with deep blues that shine from her eyes in correspondence to the shimmering gem, while these same spiritual, sapphire tones are again picked up as a sort of ‘aura’ (as one journalist put it) around William’s head. Subconciously, what Stephen has actually portrayed is both the eternity of love and the hopefulness of life; blue is both symbolic here of Diana, and of eternity itself. Diana’s love for her son still enfolds him, reaching out from eternity to bring love into his life again. The tone of blue used to portray this is the same hue we usually associate with our Blessed Mother, ‘Mary blue’ as I often like to call it. So, with a few strokes of the paintbrush, Stephen has told both a human and heavenly story of maternal love. This painting, and an interview with Stephen, is currently featured in the latest edition of Hello! Magazine, an issue dedicated to the Royal wedding.

My favourite picture in the gallery is actually—surprisingly for me—a still-life entitled ‘Tulips and Anemones.’ (See it here: www.flickr.com/photos/stephenbwhatley/2298485502/). This painting was actually created on Easter day in 2007. What many may not be aware of, is that Stephen devotes himself to prayer before commencing any work—whether it’s one of his Christian paintings or a commissioned portrait. He sees himself as an empty vessel, painting only with God’s help in ‘poverty of spirit.’ Holy feasts like Easter are times are special inspiration and heightened creativity for him, so this still-life of spring flowers is much more than at seems at first glance.

Viewing this painting in ‘real life’ is actually a powerful experience. Here he takes a pot of flowers and, for me, turns them into a vision of the Resurrection of Christ. From the darkness of the earthenware pot (stone and earth being symbols of the tomb), small buds painted in spiritual blues give rise to brilliant tulips bursting forth with warmth and life. These triumphant flowers, in the spring of life, are radiating light; light rises from darkness as life triumphs over death. The thoughtful viewer may notice the Holy Spirit breathing life and light into the main tulips—a simple white line, giving texture to the petals, actually forms the shape of a white dove in flight…and, on closer inspection, you’ll find a tiny cross in the midst of all of this…between the darker lower portion, and the more radiant heights of the picture, stands the Cross. It’s not just a picture of spring flowers, but a picture of the eternal spring God’s love has destined us for.

One of the most beautiful but hidden uses of symbolism in this work is the triangle in the middle of the painting. The shape has been used to represent the texturing of a leaf (in itself, a symbol of vitality and life), but the white triangle is actually symbolic on several different levels. The triangle, representing the Trinity, is painted in pure white, ‘kissed’ by a light smattering of ‘Mary blue.’ The colour white is not only a deeply spiritual colour because of its virginal associations with purity and especially with the Holy Spirit, but white is also not actually a colour in itself. It is the ‘coming together’ of all colours. So, in a sense, white is the ‘communion’ of colours—just as the Trinity is the communion of Love.

Stephen’s paintings radiate with life, because his vision of this world is always touched by an awareness of the God who made it, His love that pervades it and His life He wants to share with us. We can personally respond to Stephen’s work precisely because that’s what his painting is in itself: the artist’s personal response to his Creator.

Thanks Stephen, for a lovely and memorable day!

Chinese Pearl From The British Crown

The official name of this place now – the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, though the word Hong Kong comes from the southern dialect that has no official status. The today authorities of China like the Beijing dialect more, and therefore prefer this place to be called Xianggang. To understand its particular role in the geography and history of China, it is enough to have a look at the map. Several rivers, among them full-flowing Beijiang, flow into the South China Sea, forming a long and wide bay Zhujiangkou. The bay ends with two peninsulas jutting out far into the sea – the western one is called Macau, and the eastern – Kowloon. Kowloon is the edge of a new autonomous region of China. Then it spreads to Hong Kong Island and many small islands. The attractiveness of these places for explorers of the past is more than obvious: it is here where their months-long journeys from Europe ended.

Till relatively recently Macao belonged to the Portuguese and Hong Kong – to the UK. However, the pioneers of those lands (China) were also he Portuguese, who arrived here in the beginning of XVI century – the Age of Discovery. Local inhabitants had no thoughts about transoceanic trade and active smuggling – inhospitable, sparsely populated islands, with scattered here and there fishing villages, appeared in front of the explorers.

Europeans quickly appreciated the dignity of this place. Profitable trade with Chinese goods began here.

By the end of XIX century, authorities of China began to sweat because of the arrogance of Europeans running their businesses here, and in 1840 the first English-Chinese war broke out (it is called the Opium War: a pretext for the outbreak of hostilities was the order of the Government Commissioner Lin Zexu to destroy stockpiles of opium belonging to the British), which finished in 1842 with the signing of a peace treaty, according to which Hong Kong passed into “eternal possession” of Great Britain, in other words it turned into its colony. At the border between China and British territory a rather strange settlement has appeared – something like a fortress with a name Kowloon Walled City. By the end of 1980s there lived more than 50000 people on the land with sizes 100mx200m. Neither Chinese authorities nor British ones didn’t will to accept them as citizens. In 1997 the United Kingdom finally gave back the colony to China, giving to the population a possibility to get British citizenship and move where they want.

Narconon Drug Rehab Centre Crosses Continents To Address UK Ethnic Addiction Crisis

Narconon Nepal director lecturing in Farnborough near London, England

(PRWEB) May 20, 2009

Narconon Nepal rehab director flies to UK to lecture the Gurkha community to help reduce rising youthful drug abuse.

“Drug abuse and addiction miseries migrate with populations,” says Basanta Raj Kunwar, director of Narconon Nepal. This may be what unfortunately has happened with the Gurkhas, more than 100,000 of whom moved to England after a 1997 UK court decision approved that ex-Gurkha soldiers who served for the UK could receive citizenship along with their families. Speaking to Nepali parents in London, Kunwar said, “Our kids brought their drug problems along with them and found new ones here.”

Kunwar, a 23 year police force veteran and former Senior Superintendent of Police in Nepal, travelled from Kathmandu the first week of May, invited by the UK Nepali Association, to deliver drug education and awareness lectures across Greater London, from Basingstoke to Swindon, Harrow to Oxford. In a whirlwind 8 days, he delivered 9 presentations to 3,110 people and reached another 525,000 through Nepali radio, TV, and newspapers.

“We know that worldwide our communities share common drug problems,” says the energetic Kunwar, “and with our growing Narconon network, 150 centres in 50 countries, we have workable solutions. I should know.” It was only a few years ago, he says, that he researched for better drug rehabilitation solutions for Kathmandu. Since his retirement from the police, he had attempted to provide drug rehab to Nepali youth with his “Pratigya” (pledge) charitable foundation, but to poor result. Then he found the Narconon® drug rehabilitation program and got himself, his staff, and family trained up in its techniques. Now he has a 100-bed program in Kathmandu, operating from 5 different buildings. He is also constructing a new 150-bed facility in the mountains nearby, with funds donated by the International Association of Scientologists. Narconon bases its methods on the research and philosophy of humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard. The program itself is fully secular and non-religious.

In an interview by BGWS, a British military radio station, Kunwar advised Gurkha parents “you must not hide your drug addiction problems. Drugs will destroy your children if you do not educate yourselves. Happily, I can attest that Narconon can give you real help.” He recommended Narconon Hastings, England and other centres nearby in Denmark, Sweden, and Holland, as well as Nepal itself.

From time immemorial, alcohol abuse has been endemic in Nepal, but has been addressed no more successfully there than in Russia or China. Although “ganja” (hashish) has been smoked in Nepal for centuries, the drug problem escalated only in the 60s with the influx of the western hippie culture. Now there are serious heroin and other drug problems.

Kunwar showed Nepali parents how to recognize drug use symptoms and how to use urine screening kits. Within hours of returning home, four parents called him, he says, to say they uncovered drug use in their family. Kunwar himself is running a collaborative drug screening program with Kathmandu high schools. “I estimate 4,000 Nepali youth are taking hard drugs in the UK,” he concludes. “I have advised families to form up collectively to make a strategy to protect their communities.”

For more information on Narconon community awareness programs, please see Narconon Serving the Community, a brochure available online. To ask for help in the UK, go to http://www.drugrehab.co.uk.

On Wednesday 30 March 2011 the Consular Section of the British Embassy in Rome held its first Consular Tea Reception at Villa Wolkonsky, the residence of the HM British Ambassador.

The reception was held so tha Consular Section could thank all its existing consular contacts, business partners and friends, for promoting the "Consular Helpers campaign", launched this year as the Change Agent project for our Consular district.

It was also an occasion to invite new contacts, including Rome airport Immigration authorities, Civitavecchia shipping representatives, and hospital contacts, a vital network for the delivery of high quality Consular assistance to British nationals in the Rome Consular district.

Nina Prentice, wife of British Ambassador designate to Italy Christopher Prentice, gave a talk on Villa Wolkonsky which was much appreciated.

This event was a team effort and Vice Consul Rosemary Ryan and her team would like to thank all those who attended the reception.

Long term personal loans: Beneficial for the British Citizens

Financial demands are common to all. An individual may require finance to build up his own home when his neighbor may need it to start up a small business. Persons who are really in need of funds to meet educational expenditure of their kids are not fewer. Men and women can apply for long term personal loans to meet various demands.

Long term personal loans
are available in two forms: secured and unsecured.

Anybody can apply for long term personal loans in secured form if he owns valuable property like a home, a vehicle, a piece of land, real estates etc. He will have to produce documents in support of his ownership of property of worth as this property will be used as collateral against the loans. The lenders will have the right to confiscate the property if the borrowers cannot or do not pay back the loan amount in due time. Of course, the borrowers will receive reminders and warnings from the respective lenders before the confiscation.

The borrowers can secure an amount within the range of £10 000 to £75 000 which is a good sum no doubt. The lenders want that the loan amount will be cleared within 10 to 25 years. The rates of interest for long term personal loans in secured form are, however, low.

No collateral is required for long term personal loans in unsecured form. The borrowers can apply for an amount between £5 000 to £25 000. They will have to repay the loan amount within 1 to 10 years. Interest rates in unsecured form of loans are higher. As collateral is not necessary, long term personal loans are available to non-homeowners. Homeowners can also go for it.

Of course, the lenders assess financial status, credit record and current earning of the applicants before they determine the amount of loans.

The borrowers can surf the web sites of the lending agencies on the internet to study terms and conditions for the long term personal loans. They can study and compare several quotes and apply for one which may appear suitable. They can apply online and the procedure for payment of long term personal loans is easy.

The applicant must be a citizen of Great Britain, and he must have completed 18 years. He must be working in any authorized establishment, and his monthly income must not be less than £1000. He must possess a valid bank account.

Electro-Shock on The Rise in British Columbia; Torture, Not Treatment

(PRWEB) August 28, 2005

Example: A staggering 46,000 electroshocks have been given to British Columbians by psychiatrists in the past five years, almost doubling the amount delivered in the previous five years and totaling 3,143,536 taxpayer dollars in their pockets.

The number of shocks peaked in the year 2000 when psychiatrists got a pay increase to $ 70.66 each time they pulled the switch, a practice which a Coquitlam woman, says wiped out large segments of her memory,

Ms. Breena Crawley said electroshock is not treatment but torture; that since undergoing a series of these shocks her long-term memory has been irreparably damaged. She has joined with local watchdog group, the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), to have electroshock banned.

Brian Beaumont president of the Vancouver chapter of CCHR said, “psychiatrists try to persuade the population into believing that electroshock is not the bone-crunching procedure of some years ago and that the movie One Flew Over the CuckooÂ’s Nest is not a true depiction of a normal psychiatric ward but this is nowhere near the truth. Electroshock still gets the same effect as hitting someone on the head with a sledge hammer and psychiatric wards are actually worse than depicted in one flew One Flew Over the CuckooÂ’s Nest. Electric shock creates memory loss and irreparable brain damage and is now being used in every psychiatric hospital and general hospital with a psychiatric ward in British Columbia.”

“What began as a trip to a hospital to treat what I thought was a nervous breakdown, turned into a nightmare. They did not tell me anything. A psychiatrist ordered a number of electric shocks. I cannot remember how many I had. The next day they took me for the shocks they did not put me out. I begged and cried for them to put me out but I was told they could not because they had such a hard time bringing me around the last time. I could have died. I saw another girl who had received electric shock three times a day. It was terrible. She didnÂ’t even know what she was doing. When I got out of the hospital I ran away and never looked back until this day. “After these electroshocks, I was in a daze. Canada v’s UK – an immigrants point of view

1:1 = ARCHITECTS BUILD SMALL SPACES : @ THE V&A London, UK : LOOK and FEEL : BEYOND : OBVIOUS : EXPLORE : HIDDEN DEPTH : Enjoy the LEARNING : curve! :)
life in the uk practice

Architecture is intrinsically part of our everyday experience. Yet architecture exhibitions, with their emphasis on drawings, models and photographs, sometimes deny their audience an engagement with actual buildings.

Using the landscape of the Museum as a test site, the V&A invited nineteen architects to submit proposals for structures that examine notions of refuge and retreat. From these nineteen concept submissions, seven were selected for construction at full-scale.

Small spaces such as these can push the boundaries and possibilities of creative practice. A shift in scale towards smaller, bespoke structures encourages a heightened sensitivity to materials, texture and proportion. A renewed clarity emerges, allowing architects a freedom of expression that often struggles to survive in larger building projects.

HAVE YOU LOOKED BEYOND OBVIOUS?

Canada v’s UK – an immigrants point of view

When Mary and Ian contacted Muchmor Canada Magazine asking if we would be interested in their thoughts about immigration, obviously we were. They emigrated to Brockville, Ontario in June of 2006 and thought that their story was too much like other peoples – apply, wait, move and enjoy. So, we asked them instead to look at the differences between their old and new lives and we are sure you will find this very interesting.

Things we like about Canada

Our house: In the UK we lived in a compact three bedroom semi with one small bathroom and no garage just a carport. Here in Canada we own a three bedroom home with two bathrooms, a double garage and an acre of land. The Canadian house is probably three times the size of the house in the UK but actually cost us less than we sold for.

Wildlife: We love the wildlife in Canada which is much more accessible than in the UK. We get lots of birds, squirrels, raccoons and deer in our garden and just a short drive away we can see many more varieties either at the local provincial parks or down by the lake and riverside. We were shocked to get hummingbirds in the garden as we had always thought of them as tropical birds.

Roads: We love the fact that where we live the roads are never busy. In fact you can drive for miles and not come across too many other vehicles, making driving a pleasure. You can travel much further here in less time than you could ever do in the UK where there is too much congestion. Driving in Canada is definitely less stressful.

Security: We feel much safer here in Canada. In know that if you live in the big cities such as Toronto there is still ample crime, but out here in the sticks there is very little. People often leave their car windows down and cars unlocked in car parks even if there is visible stuff inside. We still cannot allow ourselves to do this though.

Peace and quiet: Although we lived close to the countryside in the UK, we still had cars going past day and night. We also had neighbours who, shall we say, were not the most considerate when playing music, revving up their cars and generally being teenage boys.

Here in Canada we still have some neighbours, but we rarely hear a peep out of them. We are on a very quiet road, and we can sit outside and not hear anything other than the birds and squirrels etc.

When we first moved into our house we had trouble sleeping, as it was too quiet in the night. The most we have to deal with is the odd raccoon squabble or a few coyote howling.

Eating Out: This is much cheaper than in the UK and we eat out here far more often than we ever did in the UK. In our local town of Brockville you can find loads of restaurants which cater for every taste and budget.

Things we don’t like about Canada

Bugs: We honestly didn’t expect as many bugs as we get here in the summer. I personally don’t seem to suffer too much, but Ian is like a bug magnet and spent most of the summer months with several bites at any one time. even after several years being here, we still haven’t got used to them.

TV: The TV in Canada/America is good in many ways, but so, so bad in others. Many of the programs are great, some of which we were watching when back in the UK like House, CSI etc. However, we cannot get used the terrible comedies they show and the constant advert breaks. An example is Coronation Street: This is a half hour show with three ad breaks, each lasting 3-4 minutes – agh!

Shopping: Food shopping is more expensive than the UK and we feel the quality is not as good in many cases. We also have to shop at more than one store to get everything we want rather than just the one as in the UK. Food prices have definitely risen a lot since we moved here, although I suppose it has in the UK too.

Lack of Manners: We have been constantly amazed by the lack of manners we see in Canada. This extends from motorist blocking junctions without a thought to other road users, to having doors slammed in your face by people not bothering to look behind them and hold a door open.

Table manners also leave a lot to be desired and many people seem incapable of using a knife and fork together. We often see someone holding a fork like a dagger and stabbing at his or her food – strange.

Lack of doctors: When we arrived in Canada we were unable to get a family doctor. This was not just a problem where we live, but countrywide, there just aren’t enough doctors for everyone. This means you either just don’t bother, or you have to go to a walk-in clinic. These clinics are generally packed with people and you have to wait for many hours to be seen: not an ideal situation.

We do have a doctor now as a new practice opened last year and we were able to get onto his patient list. Although, thankfully we have not had to use his services, i feel much better knowing we have a doctor to call upon if required.

Work: Ian found a job soon after moving here, but it was not in his field of work (IT), but he took it anyway. It took him two years to find a job in IT and it does not pay as much as he earned in the UK for similar work.

I found it very hard to get a marketing job here as my qualifications were not recognized and my UK experience didn’t seem to count. Rather than a managerial position, which I have been doing for ten years in the UK, I had to take a lesser role and work my way back up the ladder.

Although both of us could do the preferred jobs standing on our heads, we both had to almost start from scratch which we found very frustrating.

What we miss about the UK

Friends & relatives: We only have a few relatives in the UK, Ian’s mum, my parents and we both have brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces and we do miss them all. However with technology as it is we can keep in touch really easily and even see each other on our webcams. Most of them have visited us in Canada so it perhaps isn’t as bad as we thought it might be.

Next: I really, really miss shopping in Next. They had great clothes that fitted me, oh how I wish they had a store in Canada. I have heard others say this too, so come on Next open a store here.

TV: As we mentioned before North American TV leaves a little to be desired. We miss some of the UK dramas that we used to watch and although some are shown in Canada, we are definitely missing most of them. We have taken to downloading some from the internet so it’s not too bad. We do seem to spend a lot of money buying DVD’s of British TV, but it is worth it.

Food: Although we can get most of the same types of food we had in the UK here in Canada there are a few items we miss. Ian misses pork pies and I miss garibaldi and malted milk biscuits.

What we don’t miss about the UK

Driving: I don’t miss driving 35 miles to and from work every day on busy A- roads. We don’t miss the road rage and the tailgating and the excessive speeding.

Noise: We don’t miss the constant noise of the UK, be it roads, kids, cars, music etc.

We lived on an estate that meant our house was overlooked front and back by lots of other properties. Here we have wide-open spaces and privacy.

Our house: We lived in our house quite happily for over twelve years, and although it was no mansion, we never considered it cramped. Since moving here, we realize how small the house was and now wonder how we ever managed.

Summary

Although we had a pretty good life in the UK, we have a better quality of life in Canada. We have a better house, better car, more wildlife, more countryside etc. Our cost of living is a little less than the UK but not as much as we were led to believe. Houses and cars are cheap but day to day living is similar.

We have never regretted moving to Canada and hope we never will.

Older Brits Amongst Europe’s Most Web-Savvy

(PRWeb UK) March 30, 2011

People aged 55-74 in the UK are amongst the most prevalent older Internet users in Europe and, according to Age UK, feel more connected to their loved ones because of it. The statistics come during Age UK’s myfriends online week 2011, which encourages older people to use the Internet to connect with friends and family.

The statistics, collated by Eurostat(1), reveal that 43% of people aged 55-74 in the UK use the Internet frequently compared to an EU average of 28%. The UK tops European heavyweights Germany and France, where 33% and 40% of that age group regularly use the Internet respectively. However, we are still behind Scandinavian countries such as Denmark, Norway and Sweden where over half of 55-74s regularly surf the Web.

The list below represents the percentage of people aged 55-74 who frequently use the Internet. The table shows the top 15 EU countries in rank order, as identified by Eurostat:

EU Rank – 2010:

EU average – 28%

1.    Luxembourg – 58%

2.    Norway – 58%

3.    Denmark – 55%

4.    Netherlands – 54%

5.    Sweden – 54%

6.    Finland – 47%

7.    United Kingdom – 43%

8.    France – 40%

9.    Belgium – 36%

10.    Germany – 33%

11.    Austria – 27%

12.    Estonia – 22%

13.    Hungary – 21%

14.    Slovenia – 20%

15.    Slovakia – 20%

Despite these positive statistics, six million people aged 65 and over in the UK have never been online(2). To enable more older people to access the Internet and enjoy its social benefits, such as keeping in contact with friends and family more easily, Age UK is this week running myfriends online week 2011 (21-27 March 2011). The Charity is calling on people with Internet skills to pledge to pass on their knowledge to an older friend, family member or neighbour who has never been online, or for older people to attend a local training event.

With nearly one million older people saying that they are often or always lonely(3), and over half (five million) of people aged 65+ saying that they consider the television as their main form of company(4), the Internet can be hugely important in allowing people to keep in contact with loved ones and helping to tackle feelings of isolation and loneliness.

New polling(5) commissioned by Age UK has shown that 63% of people aged 65 and over who use the Internet feel that since they have been online they have been able to keep in contact with friends and family more than before. The Charity also found that of those older people who do not use the Internet, nearly one in four (24%) feel that the Internet would be a useful way of keeping in contact with friends and family more easily, suggesting there is a growing awareness of the benefits that the Internet can bring.

Linda Robson, actress and Age UK ambassador, said: “It’s great to hear that older Brits are amongst those leading the way in Europe on Internet use. As a recent convert to the online world I know the fear that people might face when going online for the first time, but it really isn’t as scary as you think and the benefits are fantastic.

“That’s why it’s such a shame that millions of older people are still not online and missing out on everything the ‘net can offer, like keeping in contact with friends and family more easily. I’d urge anyone who enjoys making the most of the Internet to take the Age UK myfriends online week pledge and help teach someone who has never been online before to get involved!”

Helena Herklots, Services Director at Age UK, said: “Older Internet users are telling us that they are better connected to their loved ones because of the Internet, reinforcing that people of all ages can really benefit from being online. However, the challenge remains to enable the six million older people who have never been online before to use the Internet.

“To help get older people online, we need people of all ages who already use the Internet to pass on their knowledge to friends, family members and neighbours. If everyone helps one older person they know to get online, the UK’s older population could surf their way to the top of the European table, helping in the battle against social isolation along the way. As well as this, older people can get practical support and training by visiting their nearest myfriends online week event.”

Margaret Goodwin, 64 from Oxfordshire and the joint Age UK Internet Champion of the Year for 2011, said: “Having recently retired I was concerned that life might become lonely, however the Internet has ensured that this is not the case. I regularly use the Internet to keep in touch with friends and family around the world and have also got back in contact with family I had lost touch with. I’ve even tried Internet dating! If I can do it there is no reason why other people in later life can’t, so why not give it a go during myfriends online week?”

OBAMAS MARXIST ADMINISTRATION ON DISPLAY FOR ALL TO SEE

Ship of Fools: Obama’s Intimates and Advisors
By Mac Fuller
The following thumbnails describe a very small sampling of the locust horde of Leftist bureaucrats President Barack Hussein Obama has deliberately chosen to help him grasp the helm of America’s ship of state, strip it from the American people, and steer it hard to port.

The Obama Administration is plainly subverting democracy in America, wildly careening our previous 230-year history of democracy so dangerously Leftward that we are in terrible danger of sinking.

In these thumbnails, three dominant themes of the Obama Administration emerge – fanatically uncompromising anti-capitalism, dangerous and blatant anti-Semitism, and the societal inculcation of dogmatic Leftist, Socialist "faith" through indoctrination of American school children beginning with the earliest ages – a practice instituted by Lenin in Communist Russia and now pounding its way into the American academic mainstream through the prolific efforts and influence of self-proclaimed Communist, Obama friend, and likely "autobiography" ghost writer, William Ayers, as well as Obama appointees like Charles Freeman and Kevin Jennings.

Make no mistake. These people are about Socialism, and they are about power. Their power.

—————————————————————————

1. Valerie Jarrett — Obama Senior Advisor and Assistant to the President for Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs. Ms. Jarrett, a product of two decades in rough-and-tumble "Chicago way" politics, and a 17-year friend of the Obama’s, is described as "the other side of Barack Obama’s brain." Born in Iran, Jarrett, who speaks Persian, moved to the United States as a child. A product of an elite, private, New England boarding school, she is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School.

Jarrett served in the administration of Chicago Mayor Harold Washington (who, prior to his election, failed to file income tax returns for 19 years and during it maintained dubious Socialist ties) as well as in the scandal-ridden, current Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley. Her step-father, Vernon Jarrett was associated with Frank Marshall Davis, the youthful Barack Obama’s mentor from age 10 until college – a Chicago Communist Party (USA) member who moved to Hawaii from Chicago. Frank Marshal Davis is now immortalized in President Barack Hussein Obama’s "autobiography" as "Uncle Frank" — conveniently with no mention of his last name nor who he was.

According to the Washington Post, Ms. Jarrett was for many years both Michelle and Barack Obama’s "tutor." Virtually every mainstream media outlet has not only done an over-the-top puff piece on Valerie Jarrett (as they repeatedly have with Mr. Obama and his wife), but all agree that neither the President not Mrs. Obama makes a move without first consulting Ms. Jarrett. Ms. Jarrett was personally responsible for bringing self-described Communist Van Jones into the White House as President Obama’s environmental "Green Czar." [1]

2. Patrick Gaspard — White House Political Director (this is the position Karl Rove held in the Bush Administration). Prior to coming on board as President Obama’s right-hand man, Mr. Gaspard was a registered federal lobbyist for the SEIU – the union members (thugs?) called-in by the Administration to run interference (sometimes violent) between Democrat members of Congress who support ObamaCare and their own constituents. Prior to that, Gaspard worked for ACORN – the community organizing front which Barack Obama worked for as a trainer, represented as a lawyer, helped as a politician, and funneled money to as a presidential candidate.

The President Obama is as much a product of ACORN as it is of him. He worked closely with the "community organizing" group for many years, represented them in court, and was a member of the board of Chicago’s Woods Fund at the time it funneled 0,000 to an ACORN affiliate. Mr. Obama praised the organization extravagantly both during and after his election, and his campaign "donated" over 0,000 to an offshoot group controlled by ACORN (Citizens Services, Inc.) – to "get out the vote."

Gaspard worked directly for now-ACORN chief Bertha Lewis as her political director for the main ACORN office which is located in New York. ACORN is mired in long-standing as well as new and growing allegations of fraud, voter-registration fraud, corruption, and massive embezzlement of funds – ACORN operative organizations have received tens of millions of dollars in federal grants.

ACORN pledged ,000,000 for voter registration drives in the 2008 election cycle.

In 2004, Patrick Gaspard served as National Field Director for America Coming Together (ACT), a group which was later fined 5,000 in civil penalties by the federal government. ACT hired felons – some convicted of sex offenses, assault and burglary – to conduct door-to-door voter registration drives in Missouri and at least two other swing states, and also employed felons as voter canvassers in major metropolitan areas in Missouri, Florida, Ohio. [2]

3. Eric Holder — Attorney General of the United States. A handpicked Obama/Jarrett selection, who earlier this year referred to the United States as "a nation of cowards" on race relations, Mr. Holder is a shiningly despicable example of everything wrong when politics and personal ambition dictate the parameters of American justice.

Prior to grasping the brass ring of the department where he’d toiled during the Clinton Administration, Mr. Holder was responsible for these widely-reported miscarriages of justice: (1) He streamlined the Clinton Administration’s pardon of fugitive billionaire Marc Rich by steering Rich’s representatives to a former White House counsel, then helped lobby the President to pardon Rich ("an unrepentant fugitive wanted on extensive fraud, racketeering, and trading-with-the-enemy charges"). Holder did so for personal gain, later admitting he hoped this would help him become Attorney General in a Gore administration. Mr. Holder concealed the pardon negotiations from other prosecuting and investigative agencies to prevent their opposition. Mr. Rich’s wife was a generous donor to both President Clinton’s library as well as his legal-defense fund.

(2) "In 1999, over the objections of the FBI, the Bureau of Prisons, and prosecuting attorneys, Holder supported Clinton’s commutation of the sentences of 16 FALN conspirators. These pardons – of terrorists who even Holder has conceded had not expressed any remorse – were issued in the months after al-Qaeda’s 1998 U.S. embassy bombings…. The commutations were nakedly political, obviously designed by Clinton to assist his wife’s impending Senate campaign by appealing to New York’s substantial Puerto Rican vote."

(3) Holder was also instrumental in the "stealth pardons" of two Weather Underground terrorists, Susan Rosenberg and Linda Evans (both closely associated with President Obama’s terrorist friends, Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn). Rosenberg and Evans had been serving decades-long sentences for bombings targeting American government facilities. Again Holder helped circumvent the pardon process and evade objections from prosecutors regarding the terrorists’ jail terms.

Just this summer, now-Attorney General Holder dismissed prosecution of an obvious case (it was filmed) of voter intimidation by members of the New Black Panthers, while also instigating prosecutorial investigations into CIA interrogation techniques of terrorist combatants. Attorney General Holder is a strong advocate for the release of the Islamofascist enemy combatants currently held at Guantanamo Bay. [3]

4. Cecelia Muñoz — White House Director of Intergovernmental Affairs. Prior to being summoned to the White House by President Obama, Ms. Muñoz was Senior Vice President of The National Council of La Raza. La Raza (literally, "The Race") is the largest Hispanic lobbying organization in America, and is committed not merely to a socialist agenda, but, essentially, the return of California, if not larger portions of the American West, to Hispanics. It lobbies heavily for completely open borders with Mexico, as well as amnesty for all illegal aliens. In order to carry out this agenda, the U.S. federal government awarded over .2 million in grants to the organization in 2005 alone.

La Raza is intimately involved with the "the radical racist group Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan, or Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan (MEChA), one of the most anti-American groups in the country, which has permeated U.S. campuses since the 1960s, and continues its push to carve a racist nation out of the American West." Aztlan’s goal is the formation of a Chicano state. The closing two sentences of Atzlan’s motto are: La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada": "For The Race everything. Outside The Race, nothing." Which ought to be as chilling as the idea of the U.S. government funding these people.

President Obama’s recent appointee to the U.S. Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor, has also long been deeply involved with La Raza – a fact which all Democrat Senators ignored during her confirmation hearing.

5. Samantha Power — Senior Director, Multilateral Affairs, National Security Council. Ms. Power, a professor of public policy at Harvard [who is married to President Obama's Leftist fringe academic Cass Sunstein, the Administrator of the White House Office of Administration and Regulatory Affairs] was only seemingly thrown under the Obama campaign bus for referring to Hillary Clinton as "a monster" during the 2008 Democrat primary. In 2009 President Obama, tapped her to occupy her senior White House foreign policy position.

Ms. Power, a "fierce critic of Israel,… was indisputably Barack Obama’s closest foreign policy adviser during the campaign. They go back years." Ms. Power is a notorious acolyte of appeasement-challenged, Neville-Chamberlain-clone Zbigniew Brzezinski (former President Jimmy Carter’s National Security Adviser) who recently stated that the U.S. should shoot down any Israeli planes which, out of self-preservation, might fly through Iraqi air space to destroy Iran’s developing nuclear facilities. Ms. Power agrees with the Charles-Freeman-published Walt-Mearsheimer-essay school of thought that America is run and being destroyed by a cabal of Jews. Power promotes the policies of disgraced anti-Semitic, Israeliphobic, pro-PLO, pro-Syria, Obama adviser Robert Malley who advocated not merely talking with Hamas, but funding the terrorist organization because he feels their policies and governance mirror that of Israel. The Obama Administration cut visible ties with Malley shortly after the election.

Power, who stridently criticized the invasion and "occupation" of Iraq, repeatedly calling for the removal of American forces from that nation, curiously advocates that America send armed military forces, "a mammoth protection force" and an "external intervention", to impose a settlement between Israel and the Palestinians. While giving the PLO, Fatah, Hamas and other obviously terrorist Arab state organizations a pass, Ms. Power views Israel, the only democratic and non-totalitarian, nation in the Middle East, as guilty of war crimes. She favors slashing, if not eliminating, United States aid to Israel – which is surrounded by several hundred million Muslims who daily pray for its total annihilation – and, apparently, giving the money to the Palestinians instead.

Ms. Power, and virtually all of her truth-through-force ilk ignore the fact that on the day Israel gained independence it was immediately attacked by the surrounding Arab neighbors who erroneously believed they could destroy the nascent country in a matter of hours. "Palestinians" (there is no such country, nor has there been since Biblical times) who now form the "Palestinian problem" were not forced to leave Israel but instead chose to do so because Israel became a Jewish state. Hundreds of thousands of non-Jewish Arabs remained and now form a large core group of Israeli citizenry. The approximately 750,000 "Palestinians" who left, now number approximately 4,000,000. They constitute a "problem" because of all the Arab countries only Jordan has allowed them to become a part of its society. The other Arab countries bordering Israel keep the "Palestinians" in enormous desert internment camps. And they have done so to their Arab brethren for 60 years. Ms. Power and her comrades exquisitely fail to note that Jews were forced to leave Arab countries and relocate to the newly-formed Israeli state.

Like her pro-Arab "realist" co-religionists Charles Freeman, Robert Malley, Zbigniew Brzezinsk, billionaire George Soros (an influential Obama supporter), and others of their stripe, Powers opposes the "Israel lobby." She, as they, adamantly rejects the participation of American supporters of Israel, including Christians, in foreign policy discussions of the Middle East.

For all Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s public visibility, it may not be much of a conjecture that her job has been outsourced to the alpha female who once referred to Mrs. Clinton as a "monster." [5]

6. Charles Freeman — Nominated, but not confirmed, as Chairman of the (United States) National Intelligence Council – which is responsible for producing national intelligence estimates for the president and his advisors. Mr. Freeman has a distinguished résumé of long service in both the State and Defense Departments, however, his "distinctive political views and affiliations" include: troubling financial ties to King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia who funds the Middle East Policy Council (formerly the American Arab Affairs Council) which Mr. Freeman heads; organizational support for professors John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen M. Walt’s lengthy, controversial, and essentially anti-Jewish essay, "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy"; his stated viewpoint that "the primary reason America confronts a terrorism problem today is "the brutal oppression of the Palestinians by an Israeli occupation"; praise for the terrorist organization, Hamas, as the only "democratically-elected" government in the Middle East; and, bizarrely, unabashedly siding with the Chinese government over the massacre at Tiananmen Square in 1989 – Mr. Freeman criticized the Chinese government for being "overly cautious."

Once Leftist liberal, New York Senator Chuck Schumer spoke against Freeman’s nomination, the gentleman withdrew – but not without "blaming his own disgrace on a Jewish conspiracy."

During his Congressional investigation, Mr. Freeman was charged with "[p]romoting public schools textbooks which the independent Textbook League describe ‘a vehicle for disseminating disinformation, including a multitude of false, distorted or utterly absurd claims that are presented as historical facts. …[with] three principal purposes: inducing teachers to embrace Islamic religious beliefs; inducing teachers to embrace political views that are favored by the…Middle East Policy Council (formerly the American Arab Affairs Council)…; and impelling teachers to disseminate those religious beliefs and political views in schools." [6]

7. Scott Gration — President Obama’s Special Envoy to the Sudan. His diplomatic policy is, quite literally the following:

"We’ve got to think about giving out cookies," said Gration who was appointed in March, "Kids, countries — they react to gold stars, smiley faces, handshakes, agreements, talk, engagement."

As even that bastion of liberal blather the Washington Post noted, "U.S. diplomacy has remained mostly in the hands of Obama’s special envoy to Sudan, retired Air Force Maj. Gen. J. Scott Gration, who is pushing toward normalized relations with the only country in the world led by a president indicted on war-crimes charges."

While President Obama’s handpicked "Special Envoy" was tempting genocidal Muslim radicals with "cookies" and "gold stars," marauding bands of guerrillas in the Sudan crucified seven Christians. [7]

8. Rahm ("dead fish") Emanuel — White House Chief of Staff. Mr. Emanuel is the notorious hardball political player from Chicago’s North Side which he represented in Congress prior to his current incarnation as President Obama’s political henchman and myrmidon. The ironically named Mr. Emanuel ("God with us") is "relentlessly partisan," thereby quite succinctly putting the lie to Mr. Obama’s campaign claim to "post-partisanship."

Nicknamed "Rhambo," President Obama’s Chief of Staff – the highest ranking office of the Executive Branch of the President of the United States – is well-know for the following accomplishments:

(1) a casual conversation style addictively laced with the most outrageous profanities and gutter language at any and all times;

(2) sending a 2½ foot-long dead and decomposing fish to lobbyist Allen Secrest with whom he was angry;

(3) threatening then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair just prior to a joint appearance with then-President Bill Clinton: "This is important. Don’t f— it up.";

(4) at dinner the night after Bill Clinton was elected President in 1992, "Rhambo" ranted about a long list of people who were the subject of his ire. As he shouted each "enemy’s" name, Mr. Emanuel punctuated his rage by forcefully stabbing the dinner table and screaming, "Dead!"

Outside of murdering a Congressional page, it is relatively difficult to improve upon these glowing characteristics of mental stability and leadership. [8]

Rahm Emanuel is Ezekiel Emanuel, "Dr. Death’s," brother.

9. Ezekiel Emanuel — President Obama’s Special Advisor for Health Policy to the Office of Management and Budget. Nicknamed in the press "Dr. Death" after former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and former New York Lieutenant Governor Betsy McCaughey pointed out Dr. Emanuel’s "healthcare" role assisting the White House in the preparation and administration of federal budget recommendations for guiding healthcare and healthcare initiatives, Dr. Emanuel (again, application of the absurdly ironic name, "God with us") is a "bioethicist." He is also hailed as President Obama’s "Rationer-in-Chief." Generally, Emanuel’s idea of healthcare rationing is to greatly restrict many treatments, medicines, and procedures to anyone over 40 and more particularly to anyone over 65. Dr. Emanuel feels similarly about the newly born until they have attained several years of age at which time he begins to view them in Malthusian terms of potential communitarian utility.

As Lt. Governor McCaughey noted, "In numerous writings, Dr. Emanuel chastises physicians for thinking only about their own patient’s needs." This is the man who was personally tapped to guide ObamaCare health initiatives – not only by President Obama and his Chief of Staff… but also by "the other side of Barack’s brain," Valerie Jarrett.

Mr. Emanuel is yet another in a tedious yet frighteningly long line of unqueried, unquestioned, and unvetted Obama advisors and "czars" about whom nothing can be known until pulled from beneath labyrinths of liberal camouflage by interested citizens, conservative Internet bloggers, and the staffs of conservative talk shows. Mainstream media long ago forfeited its credibility as well as its societal role as the fourth estate.

Dr. Emanuel is a member of the President’s Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research (curiously enough authorized under the dazzling rushed-through and unread by a single Congressman, American Recovery and Investment Act… "the Stimulus Bill") which, if allowed, will make decisions about the validity, "relative strengths and weakness of various medical interventions" as well as give clinicians…information to make decisions that will improve the performance of the U.S. health care system. Not improve medical care much less your medical care, but the "system." It’s called "rationing," and it will very likely result in unnecessary and preventable early deaths. On a very large scale.

One final point. Due to the ambiguity of the relevant language in the Stimulus Bill as well as in the various ObamaCare "reform" proposals, there will not only be great latitude for interpretation of various laws’ meaning, but these interpretations will require being instituted, oversight, and, of course, regulation. The necessity of regulation allows President Obama’s Administrator of the White House Office of Administration and Regulatory Affairs Cass Sunstein carte blanche to regulate whatever he likes.

Mr. Emanuel is the brother of White House Chief of Staff, and former North Side Chicago Congressman (5th District of Illinois) Rahm ("dead fish") Emanuel. [9]

10. Cass Sunstein — Administrator of the White House Office of Administration and Regulatory Affairs. He is a Harvard Law School professor and newly-minted husband of President Obama’s Senior Director, Multilateral Affairs, National Security Council, the Israel-phobic Samantha Power (one of several husband-wife teams in the Obama White House). Mr. Sunstein’s belief structure could understandably be called "Leftist kook" or "fringe" if not downright lunatic. Herewith:

In a 2007 speech at Harvard, Sunstein called for banning all hunting in the United States. All. Everywhere.

He actually put in writing, in his 2004 book, Animals that, "Animals should be permitted to bring [law] suit, with human beings as their representatives…."

"[T]here should be extensive regulation of the use of animals in entertainment, in scientific experiments, and in agriculture."

Mr. Sunstein, who openly argues for bringing socialism to the U.S. and even lends support to communism, wrote, "The absence of a European-style social welfare state is certainly connected with the widespread perception among the white majority that the relevant programs would disproportionately benefit African Americans (and more recently Hispanics)…"

"[A]lmost all gun control legislation is constitutionally fine. And if the Court is right, then fundamentalism does not justify the view that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to bear arms."

Were Mr. Sunstein to succeed as President Obama’s head regulator of all things American, what might happen to those millions of hunting rifles and shotguns he doesn’t want gathering dust in your cabinet?

Mr. Sunstein is a reputed "1st Amendment scholar." Having attended law school myself and actually practiced law for a quarter century rather than retreat to the head-swelling-brain-shrinking environs of academia, I can assure you that if he is, America is in very deep trouble. President Obama has made clear his White House Masterregulator is intended to regulate virtually every aspect of American’s lives – including the environment, healthcare, finance, and the economy – regardless of your feelings about such matters much less your freedom and liberty. Sunstein has argued in his prolific literary works (one bookstore tour de force was a whopping 84 pages) that the Internet is anti-democratic because of the way users can filter out information of their own choosing. He went on to assert: [10]

A system of limitless individual choices, with respect to communications, is not necessarily in the interest of citizenship and self-government… Democratic efforts to reduce the resulting problems ought not be rejected in freedom’s name.

As WorldNetDaily noted:

"It’s hard to imagine President Obama nominating a more dangerous candidate for regulatory czar than Cass Sunstein….Not only is Sunstein an animal-rights radical, but he also seems to have a serious problem with our First Amendment rights. Sunstein has advocated everything from regulating the content of personal e-mail communications, to forcing nonprofit groups to publish information on their websites that is counter to their beliefs and mission…. If it were up to Obama and Sunstein, everything we read online – right down to our personal e-mail communications – would have to be inspected and approved by the federal government."

11. Van Jones — President Obama’s former White House Environmental Adviser ("Green Jobs Czar"). Mr. Jones remains a self-defined Communist community organizer from the San Francisco Bay area (Oakland, California). He is also an Whites-hating racist with a criminal arrest record, as well as a "9/11 Truther" true believer. The 9/11 Truther organizations proselytize that former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Richard Cheney either planned or knew about the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks conducted by 19 Islamofascist members of Al-Qaeda who, aside from slamming a passenger jetliner into the Pentagon, did the same in New York City totally destroying the Twin Towers and killing almost 3,000 Americans.

When Mr. Jones, an ardent racist and Communist, was hired into the White House by "the other half of Barack’s brain," Ms. Valerie Jarrett, she expressed overflowing praise in the press and in video-taped interviews for Mr. Jones and his work, noting that "we have been watching him for a long time. [11]

12. Carol M. Browner — Director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy. Ms. Browner is a Socialist sycophant of Al Gore’s conclusion that the earth is going to evaporate tomorrow. A former EPA director, Ms. Browner is married to Leftist lobbyist Thomas Downey and remains an ardent Socialist activist. She is one of 14 leaders of Socialist International’s, "Commission for a Sustainable World Society," which calls for "global governance."

As Van Jones was an admitted Communist, Ms. Browner is an admitted and very active Socialist. What more really need be said about her with reference to President Obama who has been fully informed of her moral relativity and anti-Americanism for years since she has hardly kept it secret from either her associates, the public, nor the press. [12]

13. John Holdren — Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Other than Mr. Holdren’s well known and oft repeated morally relativistic denial of American exceptionalism, one and only one thing need to be said here about President Obama’s "Science" Czar – he is Barack Obama’s twin on the matter of abortion and has advocated compulsory abortion. Here it is again: President Obama searched for, reached out, and chose as his chief "science advisor" a plasma physicist who advocates compulsory abortion.

As John Griffing wrote of Holdren in "Enough is Enough," for American Thinker:

…for a true outrage, consider new Czar of Science, John P. Holdren, who, in a stunning display of unabashed evil, has actively advocated "compulsory abortion":

There exists ample authority under which population growth could be regulated…It has been concluded that compulsory population-control laws, even including laws requiring compulsory abortion, could be sustained under the existing Constitution if the population crisis became sufficiently severe to endanger the society.

If that doesn’t send a chill down your spine, consider his words, "All the children who are born, beyond what would be required to keep up the population to a desired level, must necessarily perish, unless room be made for them by the death of grown persons." Let that sink in: an American official supports forced abortion and the death of "grown persons." We know what that looks like. It has been official policy for years in Communist China.

President Obama quite literally has the single worst record of any elected official on the question of abortion. While in the Illinois legislature he single-handedly prevented that state’s Born Alive Infant Protection Act from leaving his committee much less being made into law. As a result, for three more years until legislator Obama became U. S. Senator Obama, Illinois hospitals and doctors were permitted to allow otherwise healthy infants who survived an abortion to receive no medical attention whatsoever until they died. They were simply, and quite literally, "shelved." The evidence of Mr. Obama’s actions and callous disregard for the lives of infants is overwhelming. [13]

14. Kevin Jennings — President Obama’s Safe Schools Czar. Jennings is a former schoolteacher who has very successfully advocated promoting homosexuality in schools, written about his past drug abuse, unashamedly and vituperatively expressed his utter contempt for religion, and detailed an incident in which he did not report to authorities his knowledge that an underage student told him he was having sex with older men – Jennings instead counseled the boy to "use a condom. " In 1990, as a teacher in Massachusetts, [Jennings] founded the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), which now has over 40 chapters at schools nationwide. He has also published six books on gay rights and education…."

In the past, Mr. Jennings has praised Harry Hay, the frequent and vocal defender of NAMBLA – the North American Man-Boy Love Association, which promotes the legalization of sexual abuse of young boys by older men.

His organization, Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, has successfully prodded some schools into making October the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) Month, as well as established November 28th as "Transgender Day of Remembrance."

None of this belongs in any school anywhere, any time, and the fact that the Obama Administration chooses to support such people with such goals and then put them in positions of great authority and power should make even the most dyed-in-the-wool middle-class liberal Democrats cringe at the depth of either their negligence, uncaring, or stupidity regarding the real Barack Hussein Obama.

And I bet all the teachers in America didn’t know this – according to Mr. Jennings (at a New York University "Education Policy Breakfast):

"… you cannot be an effective teacher if you are not aware of how [lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender] biases can influence how you interact with your students. Pure and simple."

To which Mr. Jennings added,

"It should be impossible to graduate from NYU or any other school of education without coursework – required coursework – that address issues of [LGBT] bias in the classroom and how it might influence your teaching. [It] should be a graduation requirement."

In 1999, Mr. Jennings wrote the foreward for an elementary education instruction book, Queering Elementary Education, the description of which states that it examines "five broadly-defined areas in elementary education: foundational issues; social and sexual development; curriculum; the family; and gay/lesbian educators and their allies. It seeks to provide scholarly insights, pedagogical strategies, and curricular resources for use in schools. At the core of the book is the belief that public school educators have the responsibility to affirm sexual diversity…" In elementary school?

It is Jennings himself, Obama’s "Safe-School Czar," who coined the term "safe school" as a euphemism for "pro-homosexual" school. Children’s physical safety had nothing and has even less to do now with Mr. Jennings educational background, "expertise," or agenda. "Jennings was obviously chosen for this job because of the safe schools aspect… defining ‘safe schools’ narrowly in terms of ‘safe for homosexuality’," says Peter Sprigg, a senior fellow at the Family Research Council.

"Safe school" is hardly the only word commandeered by Jennings and the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) to support propagandizing his model "safe school" into mainstream elementary education. Others include, and parents should be alert to "seemingly innocuous terms as ‘safe school,’ ‘anti-bullying,’ ‘safe space,’ ‘hate-free, ‘tolerance,’ ‘respect differences,’ ‘be an ally,’ ‘no name calling day,’ ‘be who you are,’ ‘free to be fully me,’ ‘day of silence,’ and so forth. If these terms are present [in school instructional materials], they are [probably] defined by Jennings, not Webster, and the accompanying curricular material will probably be objectionable. Jennings’ jargon and the mythical bullying epidemic even showed-up in the recent Presidential address to school children."

The Obama Administration was certainly aware of these facts long before the President and Ms. Jarrett selected Mr. Jennings, just as they selected Van Jones, and all the other members of the Obama Administration discussed here.

This is the type of colossal lack of judgment the President of The United States has not merely chosen to surround himself with, but in fact personally displays every day.

Feeling any "safer" about your kids? [14]

15. Chai Feldblum – Obama nominee to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission who signed a manifest seeking, inter alia, to legalize polygamy ("to protect households in which there is more than one conjugal partner"). See, online petition entitled Beyond Same-Sex Marriage: A New Strategic Vision For All Our Families and Relationships. Feldblum is an outspoken homosexual rights activist and Georgetown University law professor. She is "co-director of Workplace Flexibility 2010, which she described at [a] UCLA symposium as a homosexual rights group that aimed to change ‘the American workplace and revolutionize social mores. This is a war that needs to be fought,” Feldblum asserted, "’and it’s not a war overseas where we are killing people in the name of liberating them." [15]

16. William Ayers — Obama friend, neighbor, fellow board member, "respected" national educator, virulently anti-American, and dramatically unrepentant radical terrorist bomber. Mr. Ayers famously stated:

"I am a radical, Leftist, small ‘c’ Communist…Maybe I’m the last Communist who is willing to admit it…. The ethics of Communism still appeal to me."

Perhaps Mr. Ayers most notable statement was made to the New York Times in a story released on September 11, 2001:

"I don’t regret setting bombs; I feel we didn’t do enough,"

It has gradually come to light that Mr. Ayers, far from the casual acquaintance President Obama made him out to be during the 2008 election, is quite likely the real author of Mr. Obama’s "autobiography," Dreams of My Father. [16]

Mr. Ayers approach to education is as authoritarian as is his approach to society as a whole – otherwise he would not have planted terrorist bombs in an effort to compel his personal beliefs upon the rest of society. As Sol Stern of City Journal wrote:

Ayers’s influence on what is taught in the nation’s public schools is likely to grow in the future. Last month, he was elected vice president for curriculum of the 25,000-member American Educational Research Association (AERA), the nation’s largest organization of education-school professors and researchers. Ayers won the election handily, and there is no doubt that his fellow education professors knew whom they were voting for. In the short biographical statement distributed to prospective voters beforehand, Ayers listed among his scholarly books Fugitive Days, an unapologetic memoir about his ten years in the Weather Underground. The book includes dramatic accounts of how he bombed the Pentagon and other public buildings.

….

Ayers’s politics have hardly changed since his Weatherman days. He still boasts about working full-time to bring down American capitalism and imperialism. This time, however, he does it from his tenured perch as Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Instead of planting bombs in public buildings, Ayers now works to indoctrinate America’s future teachers in the revolutionary cause, urging them to pass on the lessons to their public school students. [17]

The Ayers-Obama Socialist-conversion mission carried out with the Chicago Annenberg Challenge’s 0,000,000 was a total failure, producing zero results in student learning, but succeeded in massive transfers of wealth to Leftist, Socialist, and even the Communist causes of long-time Ayers ally, Mike Klonsky, a former S.D. S. leader, college professor and Director of the Small Schools Workshop. However, neither Mr. Ayers nor President Obama have given up on their radical Leftist agenda. [18]

Ayers is married to unrepentant Weather Underground terrorist Bernadine Dohrn who was once jailed for refusing to testify before a grand jury investigating other Weather Underground members’ robbery of a Brinks truck, in which a guard and two New York State Troopers were killed. Like her husband, she remains involved and influential in school programs.

For Mr. Ayers, Mr. Freeman, Mr. Jennings, Mr. Chu, and President Obama’s Secretary of Education, yet another Chicagoan, Arne Duncan – and far too many others in the Obama Administration – education is solely about pursuing then mandating the radicalization of children through indoctrination in Leftist policies, "social justice" curricula, and Socialism itself in public schools.

The Obama Administration is currently making thousands of federal bureaucratic appointments.

Make no mistake. These people are about Socialism, and they are about power. Their power.

Earned citizenship policy will no longer be introduced

In what is said to be the first major speech by the Home Secretary with regards to immigration, she has committed to changing the current government policy and amongst other things she aims to ensure that UK is only available to those who are seen as to be the brightest and the best. The Home Secretary spoke to an audience consisting of key immigration partners at London’s Policy Exchange where she restated the government’s commitment to reducing net migration to the tens of thousands by the end of this Parliament, clarifying that this cannot be done through the current points-based system alone.

She announced the government’s approach to reforming the settlement rules including a formal decision not to pursue the so called “earned citizenship” policy.

This earned citizenship was planned to come into effect in July 2011 and concerned the path to settlement and British citizenship. However, it will no longer be introduced.

In the light of this, the UK Border Agency has said that further announcements and developments with regards to this issue will be announced in due course. Meanwhile, the existing rules and requirements for settlement and obtaining citizenship continue to remain in place.

Amongst many things, the Home Secretary has prioritised her focus points as follows:

-          To encourage an increase in the number of entrepreneurs and investors to enter the UK

-          Ending the abuse of the student route

-          Shortening the link between applicants who enter the UK on a temporarily basis and permanent settlement

The Home Secretary clearly stated that the government is determined in increasing the number of high-value migrants who come to the UK, examples include investors and research scientists. Furthermore, employers must be encouraged to fill vacant jobs with those who are unemployed and already in the UK.

When concluding her speech, she admitted that it would be a difficult task to reduce the net migration from its current level of hundreds of thousands to that of the government’s aim which is tens of thousands.   05.11.2010

Read the Small Print on Indian Overseas Citizenship Offer, Warns British Immigration NGO

London, UK (PRWEB) August 10, 2005

The Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants welcomes the Indian GovernmentÂ’s recent offer of overseas citizenship to emigrants who left India after 1950 — but warns that the small print in British law means taking it up could affect the ability to acquire British citizenship at a later date.

JCWI advises any British Overseas citizen, British Subject or British Protected Person who wishes to register as a full British citizen, to delay in applying for Overseas Citizenship of India until they have successfully acquired a full British citizen passport.

On 16 June 2005, the Indian Government decided to offer Overseas Citizenship of India to all Indians who migrated from their country after 26 January 1950 as long as their home countries allow dual citizenship under their law. Acquisition is by application only.

However the Home OfficeÂ’s position is that acquiring Overseas Citizenship of India will extinguish a British Overseas citizen, British subject or British protected personÂ’s entitlement to register as British citizen.

This is because the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002 granted British Overseas Citizens, British Subjects and British Protected Persons the right to register as full British citizens providing they have no other citizenship or nationality and have not since 4 July 2002 renounced, voluntarily relinquished or lost through action or inaction any other citizenship or nationality.

Therefore it is a requirement that a British Overseas Citizen, British Subject or a British Protected Person must possess no other citizenship or nationality to qualify for registration as a British citizen, and this will include Overseas Citizenship of India.

JCWI Chief Executive Habib Rahman said:

“We welcome the Government of IndiaÂ’s grant of Overseas Citizenship of India to all persons of Indian origin who apply for, and are eligible to be granted it. However anyone who applies should understand that it could adversely affect their claim to British citizenship at a later date. Expert advice is recommended before proceeding.”

How To Immigrate To The Uk

I believe Photography engages all to often on a superficial level. A fundamental tool in our society of control, and a driving force manipulating our consumer desires, it must be engaged with at a fundamental level where the understanding of how the image welds its power is explicit. My practice grapples with the politics of representation, using the power of display as a plastic medium.
I have a passion for observing, perhaps even a compulsion. My projects seem to always begin from a moment when something caught my attention; in my most recent work this was the gap between the image presented and worn by the residents of Tromsø and the reality of its situation.

How To Immigrate To The Uk

UK is a country that welcomes thousands of immigrants every year. It provides newcomers with jobs, social assistance, housing benefits, and unemployment and child benefits – everything that will help them to integrate to the UK society. These are the main reasons why many people around the world want to immigrate to the UK. However, not being familiar with the UK immigration policy, they have a feeling they have very little chances of getting a UK visa. Here are the three most common ways to starting your new life in the UK.

UK immigration to work is probably the largest component of UK immigration policy. It allows skilled workers to practice their professions in the UK. A person who wants to immigrate to the UK as a skilled worker needs to demonstrate s/he speaks and understands English, has a higher education degree and sufficient funds to maintain themselves and their dependants in the UK. The immigration process is simplified if the skilled worker visa applicant has a job offer from a British employer. In this case the employer can sponsor the potential employee by declaring that take full responsibility for this person and their dependants throughout their stay in the UK.

The second route to UK immigration is to apply for a student visa. The student visa allows international students to benefit from the rich UK educational tradition and experience the UK culture and way of life while acquiring a professional degree. UK student visa holders are also allowed to work for a certain amount of hours per week in order to support themselves. To immigrate to the UK as a student, foreign nationals need to present a letter confirming they have been accepted into an accredited UK college or university.

The third immigration route to the UK is the family immigration. It allows foreign nationals with family connections to UK nationals to move and settle permanently in the UK. You can move to UK if you are married to or plan to marry a British citizen or permanent resident. The British immigration authorities also recognize common law and same sex marriages and allow foreign nationals to join their common law or same sex partners in the UK.

Applying for a UK visa can be a difficult and frustrating experience. Government websites are not easy to navigate and it is very easy to become confused in the process. If you fail to fill out the correct application form or pay the correct fee, you might jeopardize your UK immigration. People who want to move to the UK permanently realize that this is a very big change in their lives and it will be beneficial for them, therefore, many feel that they do not want to jeopardize their chances of getting a UK visa and choose the safe route. At our website http://uk.immigrationvisaforms.com/ you can download the correct UK visa application pack and skip the boring government sites. We will tell you which application form to use, how to fill it out, where to submit it and what fees to pay. Using our application pack will give you the peace of mind that you have done your best to secure your UK immigration.

UK Visa Services Revamps Work Permit and Immigration Website as Client Levels Soar

(PRWEB) January 21, 2007

UK Visa Services is responding to growing demand for its expertise by launching an improved website which provides detailed information about its work permit, UK visa and immigration practice.

The London based consultancy has clients ranging from skilled, high net worth individuals to international companies and corporations seeking to recruit a workforce.

“We are currently experiencing an increased level of interest from high net worth clients in Russia and China, as well as from companies and corporations based in Japan, the United States, and the UK,” says Julia Wright, spokesperson for UK Visa Services.

“Our track record in providing fast and efficient assistance with work permit applications is continuing to pay dividends. We try to take the stress out of the process, and the updated and improved website will provide our clients with a mine of invaluable information to help make life easier.”

UK Visa Services’ multi-lingual advisory team is regulated by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner, ensuring that the highest professional standards are met. The law is complex and frequently changes but the firm stays up to date with immigration news by working closely with the government departments responsible for overseeing this legislation.

The company’s corporate clients may be UK companies wishing to bring in expertise from overseas, or firms from other parts of the world which want to establish a UK presence.

UK Visa Services processes all visa applications and, in the longer term, can help employees of corporate clients advance from initial work permits to longer stay permits, permanent residence, or full citizenship.

A work permit may not always be the answer. For example, individuals coming to the UK to set up a business may find it more appropriate to apply for business visas or investor visas. If work permit requirements cannot be met, it may also be possible to apply under the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP).

UK Visa Services’ expertise extends to many other possible avenues. These include the Training and Work Experience Scheme, which may allow overseas staff to be trained in the UK; and the Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme, which allows certain non-European Economic Area (EEA) students who have completed degrees to remain and work in the UK for up to 12 months.

The company is also aware of the potential pitfalls of switching immigration status. This is the process by which a non-EEA national who is already legally in the UK, with permission to enter or remain, changes immigration status from one category to another.

Notes for editors

UK Visa Services is a well established and successful immigration advisory practice based in London. It advises individual clients, and also helps corporate clients to meet their UK workforce requirements. UK Visa Services’ multi-lingual advisory team is regulated by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC).
