The ‘Life in the UK Test’ is a test administered by the UK Border Agency under the Home Office, the department responsible for immigration into the UK. The test is required for persons to settle in the UK, specifically to attain ‘Indefinite Leave to Remain’ status, and also to apply for British citizenship. This test covers topics about UK culture, history, culture, and everyday living in the UK. This test is meant to gauge the potential immigrant’s ability to adjust and live appropriately in the UK.
This test is a computer-based exam consisting of 24 multiple choice questions to be answered in 45 minutes. The examinee must answer obtain a grade of 75%, or correctly answer 18 out of 24 questions in order to pass. Passing the test means the individual has proved that he or she has both sufficient knowledge of life in the UK and the English language, as required by UK immigration laws.
The ‘Life in the UK Test’ is primarily based on the handbook “Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship”. This book serves as the main test preparation material for the test. It covers different facets of living in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, including but not limited to subjects government institutions, basic laws and regulations, education, housing and employment. The handbook can be purchased from the Home Office or book stores. There are also a number of free materials available in the Internet.
